If your grandparents live in a council house, do you automatically get it when they die?

My partner is sure that he will inherit his grandparents council flat when they pass away.

He did live there for over a year previously and this is why he thinks he will get it.

I think this is completely not true, but I actually have no idea. Can anyone please help?

@Maireas I suppose one could argue that their property empire is their business and people in council houses are allowed to run legal businesses.

My tenancy says I can own another house, it don't say 100 but it's not against the tenancy to and that I can let out a room if I want to just not the whole house and I still have to live there. I'm not allowed to move out and profit from renting it all out though

Of course not..

My grandparents lived in a council house for nearly 50 years and it went back to the council when they died, not to my mum.

Many misinformed posters on here. He should have spoken to the council concerned to get the proper advice.

No. I'm sure there are much more knowledgeable people on here, who can help you further. It's a council property. My knowledge is limited, but definitely No. I think your partner is misinformed, sadly. It does not make him a bad person, just misinformed. I can only suggest, talk to your local council. They will tell you what you need to know. Sadly, it may not be what you want to hear. I am NOT a Housing Officer. I stress that. Good luck x

He won't only be told no, he will be asked to move his DF things out within two weeks so another family can have the house

OP - can he speak to the council so they can confirm what people on here have said.

softplay999 · 18/08/2021 16:26

@BobISMyUncle thank you for the nice message. He is definitely not a bad person and he is not trying to get the property, he has just been misinformed! I have told him that he won't get it and he barely shrugged. He isn't that bothered it turns out.
