Book recommendations for 7 year old?

My 7 year old is a bookworm and has gone through the Storey Treehouse series in just a few weeks. She absolutely loved them. Now she’s hounding me for more books. Which I am delighted about. But I have trawled Amazon and don’t know what to buy.

I wondered if anyone had any other suggestions for her. I was thinking Jacqueline Wilson but some of the themes seem a little grown up for her (she’s an excellent reader but she’s quite a “young” 7).

She also loves Roald Dahl and we have all of those books.

Also - what are your views on a kindle for her? Is this a good idea or is she better with books just now?

There's a 4 book series about a cat, frog, bird. First one is called The Familiars. I think one of author's last names is Jacobson.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe series?

Would she like the Little House on the Prairie series?

Ash Ridley and the Phoenix book?

Sorry, most books I can think of would be for middle grade like 12+. When she's a bit older maybe Harry Potter? Charlie Bone series? The Wunderling?

some random ideas for you....

Jeremy Strong books are good. Tom gates are similarish to the treehouse ones and my 7yo loves them!

Also the Mr Majeika books are good for this age. Short stories, and easy to read but engaging. :)

Enid Blyton? The Mallory Towers books were my favourites (still re-read them now).

Kindles can be good but at 7 I think I would stick to books, it hirts my eyes reading on screens for too long.

Take a look at Pamela Butcharts books
The Amelia Fang series by Laura Ellen Anderson
Mabel Jones series by Will Mabbit
The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy
Witch Wars series by Sibeal Pounder
Ottoline books by Chris Riddell
Lottie Lipton adventures by Dan Metcalf

Personally I preferred to stick to actual books at that age so wouldn’t go for a kindle yet. I think they’re more inclined to read when the books are visible in their room or on the shelf plus kindles are not that sturdy.

Btw I agree Jacqueline Wilson is too old for a 7 year old.

Seconding The Worst Witch series of books.

Tom Gates
Pamela Butchard
Chris Riddell (Ottoline series)
Dianne Wynne Jones (Chrestomanci series eg)
Terry Pratchett children’s books, eg Witches Vacuum Cleaner
Mr Gum series (I’m not a fan but DD likes)
David Walliams (ditto)

The wild robot by Peter Brown is great!

FazedNotPhased · 15/08/2021 16:43

Mrs Pepperpot
Pippi Longstocking
Fabio Flamingo by Laura James (she does some other good titles as well)
Pizzazz by Sophy Henn
The Boy Who Grew Dragons series by Andy Shepherd
Charlie Changes into a Chicken by Sam Copeland

I wouldn't give her a Kindle. I still have several books I read at that age, including Minnow on the Say and Tom's Midnight Garden, both by Philippa Pearce. Enid Blyton's two school series, Malory Towers and St Clare's. The William books by Richmal Crompton. Jennings school series by Anthony Buckeridge.

muddyford · 15/08/2021 16:54

If she is animal-mad, The Incredible Journey, also a series by Jane Thompson called The Otter Twins and other animals. Horse-mad, try Ruby Ferguson's Jill books.

The Brightstorm books have gone down well here. Harry Potter.

ikeepseeingit · 15/08/2021 17:00

Anne of green gables, Enid blyton ( all of them!) a little princess, toms midnight garden, the secret garden, Peter Pan, the railway children, Winnie the Pooh, Paddington bear. There’s so many more! I’m sure a few might not suit if be a little too old, but I loved all of those around that age. I started reading Jacqueline Wilson at 8 and stopped at about 12 with the older girls books. My mum also used to go through a few pages of Harry Potter before bed and I would look for difficult words then read it! So I read up to book four ‘alone’ at 7. It was fab.

Thank you. She’s read the worst witch. I read them to her last year and she’s read a few herself since. Mallory Towers is a good shout! I loved Mallory towers

My 7 year old has been reading Isadora Moon and the princess in black lately and loves them. She’s also just started on Harry Potter and is really enjoying the first one so far.
