Has anyone ever managed to get a prescription for strong(er) painkillers for periods?

I'm wondering if it's worth speaking to my GP about this or if I'll be fobbed off with being told to take a couple of paracetamol, a cup of tea and have an early night?
My periods (recently) have been excruciating and paracetamol isn't even touching the sides, it's only a few days a month so I can power through it but surely there has to be something out there!? Anything stronger than a nurofen???

I have endometriosis (diagnosed by laparoscopy) and have painful periods the first couple of days. I get codeine prescribed, just enough to cover my periods. Usually only need it for two or three days but it helps. I also use Deep Heat patches if I have to be out and about.

Have you considered getting a gynae opinion? Extremely painful periods aren’t something you should just put up with.

Yes. But not in the U.K. Also, I used a mooncup and told the doctor how much blood I was loosing each month. I was booked in for an MRI the next day.

When I was in the U.K., my GP told me it was normal, take paracetamol if I really felt that I needed to and get on with it.

I now have some major issues with trusting medical practitioners.

In my experience they give you mefenamic or tranexamic acid instead, but perhaps if you're firm enough they'll listen.

Good luck. Flowers

Yes been perscribed mefanamic acid for period pain even when I was on the pill as was often doubled over with pain for two to three days a month.

Thanks for the replies. I'll contact my GP and push for something more - I'd already resigned to just dealing with it tbh. @ThePontiacBandit In my haze I hadn't even thought seeking a gynae opinion!

Mefanamic acid can be prescribed for the pain.

tranexamic acid Is for excessive bleeding.

Neither are miracle cures tbh. I’d recommend a gynae referral.

Yes: naproxen and codeine for mine when they were really bad.

Coffee2sugars · 15/08/2021 10:10

I get zapain 30mg and naproxen 250mg for mine. Paracetamol alone didn't touch the sides, and I ended up taking paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin together for a while. I've also tried tranexamic acid and mefanamic acid and had ablation but still in agony.

Explained all to the doc and now things are much better since the move to zapain and naproxen.

Yes, I get naproxen on prescription.
