I have been vegetarian for 30 years but am thinking I now should start eating fish

For health reasons.
Any advice? I'm not sure I'll even like it but can persevere.
We're told to eat 'oily fish' regularly, how does that translate into a meal?

Having been vegetarian for 20 years I fairly recently started eating fish - I started giving it to my toddler because he likes fish and meat (he eats both at nursery) and wasn't eating the vegetarian sources of protein I'd always eaten and served him (wouldn't touch beans or lentils). It sort of naturally slid into me and DH eating it too. Meat was a bridge too far for me but I found it quite easy to go back to eating fish - but I always preferred it to meat anyway. We normally eat fish twice a week, and make sure at least one of them is oily (mostly salmon, sometimes trout or mackerel). We mostly just have a fillet with potatoes and green veg but sometimes it's fish pie, salmon pasta or risotto, or kedgeree.

I can't say I've actually noticed any obvious health benefits myself - though I'm trying to lose weight at the moment and it's hard to find a veggie meal that is as filling and as low-cal as fish and veg, so that's a bonus.

Eating fish is really bad for the environment. Can’t you take an oil supplement if you need oil. Otherwise it’s. Backwards step.

I have been vegetarian for 29 years and couldn't imagine eating meat or fish again!

When I make fish for the DC I tend to do salmon fillets (with a bit of cajun seasoning and oil/butter) loosely wrapped in foil. With a veg stir fry/potato wedges/a potato waffle depending on how much time I have!

God no!!
Fish are only high in omega 3 because of the algae they eat.
You can get algae omega 3 tablets.

The pollution of the seas mean most, if not all fish are badly contaminated with all sorts of heavy metals and other toxins.

Fishing is one of the worst, most destructive, horrendous practices for the planet.
It would be better for the environment to go back to eating meat than fish if you are worried you are missing ‘something’

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 14/08/2021 22:36

Wtf!! Why would you? Fishing is absolutely horrendous for the environment and you definitely don't need to eat fish 'for health'

I was a vegetarian for a long time then began eating fish whilst I was pregnant with DD. I started as I thought it would be good for my brain and her general nutrition. Home made fish cakes, poached salmon, sardines in pasta and mackerel on toast are very easy to do. It doesn’t have to be very often. Oh, and fish pie!

Eat what you want. For veggie omega 3 sources, as above, you can get algae oil supplements, and/or sprinkle milled flaxseed/chopped walnuts on your porridge.
