Entry level Kindle battery life

Rockbird · 14/08/2021 20:57

Just bought a new Kindle yesterday, the £79 entry level one. Charged it to 100% and have been using it intermittently today and it's down to 45%. My old Kindle Paperwhite is about 7 years old but the battery lasts for weeks. Is this really how bad it is or have I got a dodgy one? Amazon reviews are mixed on the subject.

Do you mean a tablet or an ereader?

Oliveandsage · 14/08/2021 22:17

If it’s the tablet - that sounds about normal! I have a kindle tablet and I find the battery life really poor - I used to have a kindle e reader which I charged monthly!

Travellingraspberry · 14/08/2021 22:17

Sounds a bit dodgy to me, I bought the same model end of June, think I might have charged it once since then. Not used it every day but on my second book. I do tend to use it at the dimmest light level though I'd that makes a difference?

OvaHere · 14/08/2021 22:36

I bought one a couple of weeks ago after getting fed up of the kindle app draining my phone battery. Mine was a similar price so probably the same model.

Like you I'm a bit disappointed because the battery doesn't last as was expected. I have to charge it if I've read for more than a couple of hours a day. I'm reading a fairly long book that I'm about 3/4 of the way through and have needed to charge it back to full power twice now.

I still like it better than using my phone for various reasons but the battery life advertised seems misleading. It stays well charged if I'm not using it but that's not really the point.

Have you got it on aeroplane mode? Mines an old paper white but the battery drains quickly (albeit not that quickly) if I don’t switch to aeroplane mode while I’m reading

Got one few months ago

Battery is a disaster

The tablet itself is a disaster
Cuts out
Turns itself off

Not happy at all

Gladioli23 · 14/08/2021 22:42

Is it the eReader or the tablet?

I thought the eReaders had a "thirty day" battery life at 1 hour per day.

OvaHere · 14/08/2021 22:43

I did a quick google and found some tips that might help both of us. Seems the front light and being connected to wifi are a big battery drain.

The tip about aeroplane setting might be helpful. Thanks

Thanks, it's the e-reader. I suppose I've read about 4 hours today and it's now at 33%. Old one would barely have noticed.

I'll look at that OvaHere thanks. And see about the aeroplane mode too. How annoying though.

33% after 4 hours seems low to me. I don't use the light though. I'd ask Amazon for a replacement.

Gladioli23 · 15/08/2021 00:01

I think this should show it should do 4 weeks: I'd recharge, switch off wi-fi and check screen brightness. I'd also take a photo with a time stamp when it's fully charged and then if it discharges too fast take another but that's because I'm a paranoid Android when it comes to getting companies to behave.

Amazon are actually pretty good on these things - I’d call or get on Live Chat with customer services and ask about it. They might replace for free as it’s quite new.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/08/2021 08:41

Sounds like something's wrong. I normally keep mine in airplane mode, but others on here say they keep their wifi on so they can read on their phones while out and about and the battery still lasts for weeks.

What light setting have you got it on? I found the instructions to have the light setting on high in daylight a bit strange and unnecessary. I keep mine on 6/20 permanently and it looks like a normal book in daylight and I can read in the dark without having to change the setting.

Sometimes the software gets a glitch in it, like constantly indexing or something and that can run the battery down quickly. This can be fixed by properly restarting the kindle. I think you have to hold the power button down for 30s? until the screen goes white and then it will reset itself.

But if none of that works, I'd ask Amazon on live chat that it's not what you expected and see if they have anything else to suggest or will let you exchange.

Reallybadidea · 15/08/2021 08:44

I've got a 6 year old basic Kindle and the battery lasts much longer than that. Sounds like either a duff one or the quality has decreased massively. Either way, I would definitely complain.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 15/08/2021 08:46

I've got an ancient Kindle that's about 10 years old, and another that was bought in 2016 and both have a much longer battery life than that.

Rockbird · 15/08/2021 10:04

Thanks all. I've rebooted and fully charged, turned aeroplane mode on and put the brightness down to about 5, which is fine for me. If it doesn't last considerably longer than the last charge then I'll get on to Amazon. I don't remember even looking at the battery on my old one.

Fingers crossed it's better! I have a 5 year old kindle and it also lasts weeks so it definitely feels like a fault
