Chop Suey: what flavour sauce?

I don't usually order Chop Suey but fancied something with veggies on as well as prawns.
What sauce does it normally come with?

I didn't get what I was expecting at all and don't know if I'm being unreasonable.
Thank you

I was expecting a generic brownish sauce with soy sauce in and a little thickening: just a plain umami flavour with all the bits coated.

What sauce did you get?

I’d also expect something soy sauce based.

It was a thinner/less flavourful sweet and sour. Something I definitely wouldn't have chosen.
I was so surprised I wasn't sure if it was odd or just me. Tbf it was OK, just bit what I wanted it would have picked off a menu.

I'm not sure if there is a defined 'chop suey', it's probably one of those English dishes that doesn't really exist in China and I think it just means 'fried bits' or something.

The Chinese takeaway we go to does it how you describe, just a plain sauce that's probably stock, cornflour and maybe a bit of garlic and ginger but nothing else. I don't like it, but I do sometimes get dry fried noodles with prawns and veg though, but if I want soy sauce on, I just put it on at home, I don't know if there's a ready made dish that is already soy sauce flavoured.

@BarbaraofSeville Chop suey was invented in San Francisco.

I just googled chop suey it’s the bound by a starch thickened sauce that sounded a bit yuck to me. Sounds just like leftovers. I’m Chinese and have never eaten something called chop suey but guess my end of the week stir fry veg and use anything up and mix with noodles is akin to this. I use ginger, soy sauce, five spice and rice wine. No thickening agents though, it’s thick gloopy sauces that make Chinese takeaway horrible.
