Those mysterious teeny tiny holes in the front of T shirts…

Has anyone EVER worked out how they come about?

No it’s not the washing machine.
No it’s not moths.
No it’s not a belt buckle.

So…where do they come from?

I’d love to know. They always seem to come in pairs.

I expect it’s cheap cotton fibres. It’s very mysterious.

DoubleHelix79 · 14/08/2021 10:49

Thought it was just me! One of life's biggest mysteries.

Gingernaut · 14/08/2021 10:49

No idea.

I've lost three good jersey 'interview' tops and it's royally bugging me.

hugoagogo · 14/08/2021 10:50

Rock burns?

MoreAloneTime · 14/08/2021 10:50

I wondered if it was the ridges on my jeans, there seem to be more lower down

Wassailer · 14/08/2021 10:50

Do you have a granite work surface in the kitchen?
When I changed my work surface the holes stopped appearing 🤷🏻‍♀️

liveforsummer · 14/08/2021 10:50

I just got them in my lovely merino designer jumper - I did assume moths although I've not seen any. The cheap primark one next to it in the wardrobe is unscathed of course

SoddingWeddings · 14/08/2021 10:51

As a teenager they were blim burns... These days it's either the cat or happens in the washing machine - catching on buckles / edges etc

Wassailer · 14/08/2021 10:52

Or maybe the elves who knitted the fabric kept dropping a stitch Grin

AlmostSummer21 · 14/08/2021 10:52

I don't know. Years ago there was a HUGE thread about it & I was somehow convinced it was indeed the washing machine. Something having damaged one of the 'holes' in there, bending it a bit and that it only happens to t-shirts because of them being a a certain size/shape, material & weight. 💁🏻‍♀️

ACPC · 14/08/2021 10:52

It must be rubbing against buttons/belts. What other explanation could there be? It's actually quite creepy how the wee buggers just appear. If not buttons, dark forces are at play Grin

skinoncustard · 14/08/2021 10:52

I'm convinced they are from the edges of granite worktops. I only ever get them when I visit a friend who has this worktop, and she is constantly complaining of tiny holes in clothes.

Shapesorted · 14/08/2021 10:52

Car seat belts?

Notonthestairs · 14/08/2021 10:52

Seat belt rubbing?

Daisydoesnt · 14/08/2021 10:54

gah me too! I have now just assumed it must be moths; I recently bought a few new t-shirts and the first time I took one out of the drawer to wear, it had holes in. So that can't have been wear on belt buckles/ seat belt/ work top or anything like that. It's always at the front too, about belly button level; why?

HavelockVetinari · 14/08/2021 10:54

It's definitely moths

skinoncustard · 14/08/2021 10:55

PS. they are always on the front bottom half of clothes never anywhere else.

RubyGoat · 14/08/2021 10:55

Are you about 5ft - 5'5" in height? People who are much taller, or who never do any housework at all, particularly washing up, don't seem to get them.

onemouseplace · 14/08/2021 10:56

I'm pretty sure mine come from where my laptop rubs against where my top sits over my jeans/ zip when I'm sat on my arse on the sofa.

They are always in the same place so can't be things getting caught in the washing machine.

househuntinginthesouth · 14/08/2021 10:56

Do you put them in the machine with other types of clothes? I found I stopped finding them on clothes when I stopped putting them in with trousers/jeans etc so I'm assuming the sharp zip bit was catching when it was spinning.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 14/08/2021 10:56

Me too, 3 tiny little holes on t-shirts etc. I don't think it's moths because I have moth repellent wooden things that go over the hanger to prevent this.

skinoncustard · 14/08/2021 10:57

Would moths, washing machines be clever enough to only damage clothes in the belly button area?

Totallydefeated · 14/08/2021 10:58

For me I’m sure they come from the fabric getting caught between the kitchen worktop and my jeans button/waistband and then being rubbed as I cook, wash up etc

onemouseplace · 14/08/2021 10:59

Also - I think it must be jeans/ trousers as I didn't get them at all in the last 18 months in the year-of-the-elasticated-waist when I was barely out of joggers.

SpacePotato · 14/08/2021 10:59

Washing machine or being snagged on something and the tiny hole increases with time

I get them on my dresses and t shirts.
