Eco friendly wins

What eco friendly changes have you made that have turned out to be better, more convenient, cheaper etc?

For me, it's been a bar or shampoo! Lathers and leaves my hair in much better condition than any bottled shampoo I've found and takes up far less space in the shower.

Also my compost bin. So much better than lugging heavy, dirty bags of compost from the garden centre and very handy for getting rid of food and garden waste.

I'm not a total eco-warrior but it just occurred to me today that a lot of environmentally friendly alternatives are often thought to be inferior, more expensive or less convenient but that's not always the case.

So please, share your eco friendly wins so I can adopt some more in my life!

My husband likes those kitchen and bathroom wipes and I've managed to persuade him to use a reusable cloth and cleaner instead. Not sure how much better for the environment it is but feel it must be.

Also rain water butt in the garden, we're on a water meter so that's saved money there.

I've switched to washable cotton face pads, daily pantyliners and period knickers, which I chuck in with my normal wash. During the various lockdowns, I've appreciated knowing that I wouldn't run out.

Home things tablets for cleaning. They are all the ingredients in cleaning products without the water. You dissolve them in warm water and use. I prefer them to Method and I can use my old method bottles to store it

Smol laundry tablets

Both of these are roughly equivalent in price.

Silk dental floss.

Those resealable plastic bags from Tesco instead of wax wraps which I don't like for storing cheese and stuff in the fridge.

Shampoo bars. They last forever. I haven't found a conditioner l like though

Soap instead of shower gel.

I won't go back to any of the old stuff.

If anyone can recommend a toothpaste I d be grateful. I don't like any I've tried -tablets or stick

I've got the period pants too which are great. Not brave enough for a mooncup.

And a water butt.

Interested in the home things tablets. I'll keep hold of my method bottles when they run out and give them a go.

I'm trying smol dishwasher tablets at the moment but not impressed so far, they're not cleaning very well.

Great suggestions thank you all.

Wear clothes a few times before they go in the wash.

KeflavikAirport · 13/08/2021 19:46

Period pants and generally just not buying shit I don't need.

These thermos flasks; they keep the water hot enough to make a mug of tea when I want it and they have saved me so much money! No need for single use cups either.

These Pyrex dishes with lids; they will go in the freezer, dishwasher, microwave or oven. Since starting to use them, I haven’t bought any more cling film or alumni foil.

Kettle with a marker that shows how much water you need for 1 and 2 cups
