Looking for some UTI info and advice!

Hi all,

I woke on Monday with a horrible feeling down below. I thought it was coming from my coil - checked the strings though and all seems ok there.

As the day progressed I felt it was coming from my urethra and I was having to pee more than usual. No stinging when I pee but very stingy in that region constantly.

Spoke to a nurse at the clinic where my IUD was inserted and she said UTI, go to pharmacy. Which I did.

I have now completed a 3 day course of antibiotics - took the last one about an hour ago.

I have two issues - still going to the loo a lot and still have that urge. And lower back is still sore.

Feel so incredibly sick - this started within a couple of hours of starting the antibiotics. This is the worst part at the moment.

I don’t think I have a temp - no way of telling but don’t feel hot to touch etc. No abdominal pain really.

Do I give the antibiotics a little more time or should they have worked already?

To complicate matters we are glamping away from home.

I would ask for a different antibiotic.

Yes you need to try a different antibiotic. It's such a pain (literally), especially on holiday.

Ok thanks - not sure how to go about this. I’m in Scotland so maybe 111

I’m away for 4 nights and really don’t want to leave it until Monday

Is it normal to make the whole of down below generally feel like shit

OP posts:
Sonata13 · 12/08/2021 16:42

Yes it's normal. Please be aware that sometimes our bodies are resistant to a certain antibiotic. I had my urine sent to a lab to find the right antibiotic for me. Trimethroprin didn't work so they tested me and gave me Macrobid which finally worked. Get well soon.

Shellfishblastard · 12/08/2021 16:49

Thanks so much. I’ve called my GP to see if they will send a prescription to a local pharmacy - waiting on a call back just now

@BrianBettyGrable

UTIs are awful, you have my sympathy. Last one I had sounded similar to yours, I needed the course of ABs extended to 7 days. Is it Macrobid? I also found they made me feel nauseous, all in all it was a bit of a grim few days, but the urgency/frequency and pelvic pain cleared up around day 5 of ABs.

You need to seek medical advice, which I know is a nightmare as you're on holiday, but I really wouldn't leave it.

No, I was given Trimethoprim - a 3 day course.

After taking ibuprofen at 3ish I feel a bit better just now. Still peeing a lot and burny down below.

GP said I had to call 111 because I am away - spoke to 111, went through all of the questions, only for them to say at the end that I need to call back after 6pm!

Nobloat21 · 12/08/2021 17:56

It is common to be resistant to this antibiotic: Trimethoprim. Hopefully you'll get a script for another one. I always try and have a box in my first aid kit. It's for horrible. Hopefully a few doses and it will feel much better.

Bagelsandbrie · 12/08/2021 18:00

Trimethoprim is the first antibiotic they tend to prescribe but it’s not always the best. Macrobid can help some people but if it’s spread to your kidneys or you have kidney issues don’t accept that one. Something like cefalexin generally works best or maybe just a longer course of Trimethoprim.

Definitely seek medical advice.

(Sufferer of long term recurrent UTIs and take daily Cefalexin long term).

Shellfishblastard · 12/08/2021 18:26

That’s great to know thanks.

It’s not burning when I pee but burning at other times - is that fairly normal?

Winnona · 12/08/2021 18:31

@Bagelsandbrie my mother used to get recurrent utis. I read a paper about D mannose as both a treatment and preventative. She started taking it & has not had one since (6months). I think it is a great alternative to long term antibiotics.

Justa47 · 12/08/2021 18:31

@Shellfishblastard

Could take 7 days to work and take the whole course.

Did they do a urine sample for a sensitivity test?

Shellfishblastard · 12/08/2021 18:49

I’ve ordered D Mannose so will take those for sure.

Do you find symptoms get worse if you do a lot? I had a busy day. Ironing, packing, travelling and then we walked a lot when we got here. That’s when I really started feeling like shit.

CausingChaos2 · 12/08/2021 18:56

I’m afraid Trimethoprim never works for me. Usually you’ll feel an improvement after the first 24 hours so definitely time to try an alternative if you’re no better after 3 days. You’ve done really well to stay active - I’m normally dashing to the loo every 2 minutes.

Yeah have needed the loo but have been getting organised to come away. I felt awful walking when we arrived though

Had no idea a UTI made us feel so poorly

Sometimes when I get a UTi the antibiotics give me thrush instantly too. So that could be the burning feeling - that's what it feels like to me.

My legs, vulva and bum ache when I get them too, so painkillers regularly.

I also drink the sachets like cystopurin and they help dull the ache and peeing is less painful.

I get it about once a month, it's a total pita!

cherrypiepie · 12/08/2021 19:25

It's absolutely rubbish op and few for you being on holiday with a UTI. I have had many over the years and lots require two or three course of antibiotics. Often like you describe just a general weird feeling.

Last year I had a three day course of nitrofuratoin (macrobid) followed but a 7 day course that did work. They often start treatment with trimethoprim or nitrofuratoin but you must persist with the phone calls as you will feel pretty poorly quickly.

I've had co-amoxiclav before and cefalexin if the other too fail. If you feel worse or no better after 48 hours go back.

I have also been to the minor injuries unit and they will gave me either a prescription or the tablets (my hairdresser told me and they were more than happy to see me about 7 years ago now though)

Recommend reading the NICE guidelines on prescribing.

Shellfishblastard · 12/08/2021 19:28

Omg my bum is aching too and I was a bit worried about that. And my vulva. Just all feels like shit.

I’ve got an appointment with the OOH service near where we are.

I also have sachets @bettertimesarecomingnow. I took 2 yesterday and one so far today. They make me gag so badly but if they help then 🤷‍♀️

Similar symptoms here - no stinging but very achy and weeing all the time but then need to go again within half an hour. I've finished a 3 day course of antibiotics with no change but just phoned to find out that the urine sample tested negative!

I've requested another telephone consultation but does this sound normal? Can I have a UTI if it's come back negative? Been feeling like this for 10 days now.

mutedrainbows · 12/08/2021 19:37

Some antibiotics won't work as the types of bacteria causing the infection vary. Bad luck that the first course didn't work!

Drink loads and loads of water so when you feel the need to wee something actually comes out, hot water bottle on your abdomen. D Mannose is great but is more preventative, so worth taking going forward if you're particularly prone.

Feelingpoorlysick · 12/08/2021 19:40

Please make sure you get some different antibiotics. You need to be careful as it could turn into a nasty kidney infection. I suffered for about 9 months all because my original UTI wasn't treated properly.

Sorry you’ve got this too. Are you prone to them? I’m not - however I think it was caused by sex with DH where I didn’t pee afterwards Blush I had been out at a friends 40th garden party and drank from 4pm - 11pm. Plus DD woke and I went into her room to settle her. So I was less careful at peeing. Never, ever again. I dare say the alcohol and the lack of peeing was to blame?

Bagelsandbrie · 12/08/2021 19:49

Do not take the d mannose if you have kidney issues or until the UTI has completely cleared - if it spreads to your kidneys the D mannose will make it worse. (Bitter experience)! Seems like everyone online and on various forums is very quick to recommend DM as a miracle cure for UTI issues but it only helps if they are fairly easily treatable and not kidney related (and often people don’t know if they are)!
