Fir those of you who do your big shop online, how do you plan your week?

This probably seems like a daft question, but if you do a weekly online shop how do you plan your week? Like do you meal plan for specific days. What day do you place your food order and what day do you receive it?

Really struggling to get our house in a workable routine.

Thanks all, finding this really interesting.

H likes to plan the week ahead on a Sunday evening, but doesn’t like food planning.

Some great ideas. Also thanks for the best app recommendation. I’ll look into it.

I have a delivery every Thursday, the delivery is more expensive on Friday and the weekend. I plan meals through the weekdays. We’re usually out one day at the weekend so eat out and something quick over the other weekend day. Sometimes we might go out to see family so eat there.

I make sure I make a list including all the snacks and lunch bits for the kids through the week. If we have unexpected guests, this involves an extra trip to the supermarket.

SirenSays · 12/08/2021 14:10

I get a massive shop once a month then top up with little bits from Lidl and Asian supermarket as I go. I portion out and freeze lots of the meat.
I make sure to include super easy bits for the days I'm too buys to cook (ramen, pizza). Then its just a case of going by the use by dates and cravings. Today I planned for Chinese clay pot rice, but now I don't really fancy it and I have lots of eggs, spinach, mozarella and fresh herbs that we need to eat so I think I'll have to change dinner plans again.

Order on Wednesday for pick up on Saturday. Can edit for last minute changes up to the night before.

I don't assign meals to specific days but try to stay aware of anything with perishable ingredients to use up asap before it gets to the end of the week and we're tired etc. Plan a mix of fresh kind of stuff and long life eg freezer meals, pasta etc.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 12/08/2021 14:22

I don't. I just get a range of stuff and there's always something to cobble together.
I've done meal planning in the past and just couldn't sustain it. If you've got a selection of the basic food groups then there's always meals to make.

@jay55

I live alone. Delivery usually on a Monday. Plan for lunches and 4/5 dinners and eat in the order of best before date.
This, except there’s 4 of us.

We get our deliveries on a Saturday morning in time for nice stuff for lunch (eg baguette or other bakery goodies). That means it has to be finalised on Friday at 11pm (Sainsburys).
I plan roughly what we will have on each day depending on what we have on but I always under-plan by one day in case of a change of plans and then we can always have something out of the freezer or beans on toast. I nag DP to tell me what snacks and lunch stuff he wants and he knows if he doesn’t tell me in time then he doesn’t get it.
I have the app on my phone so I normally book a slot with £40 of stuff we normally get then can really easily edit it every time I think of something I want to add or remove.

We tend to have the same meals each week, so don’t really meal plan.
I book my delivery for Sunday mornings. I start a new paper shopping list each Sunday and add to it throughout the week then do the order on a Saturday evening, it’s with Sainsbury’s so until 11pm. (Neither DP and I are particularly sociable so we’re happy to sit down with a drink in our pyjamas watching a film/tv and do the shopping).
I do a top up shop in store mid week - fruit, veg, salad, milk and a couple of treats for Sat evening.

PositiveLife · 12/08/2021 15:53

Mostly I'm chaotic with it!
I'm often busy at weekends but will try to get a Sunday evening slot if possible. Similar meals each week with easy variations (different meat, or different veg). I'll make sure to order enough for the evening meals for all the days we're home, plus enough for lunches and breakfasts.
I do the planning of what to have when once the shopping arrives. I'll have a rough idea when I order but the dates sometimes mean I change it.
Occasionally top up from the co-op if needs be, such as kids using more milk than expected.

WeAllHaveWings · 12/08/2021 16:06

Two £40 orders a week with tesco delivery saver.

Sunday morning with Sunday lunch/dinner and meals, bread, veg and milk for mon-wed. Thurs lunchtime delivery for thu-sat.

Planning meals twice a week means I know better what lunches /dinners will be needed, or if we are eating together or at different times.

Canigooutyet · 12/08/2021 16:21

I don't plan. I see what I don't have Chuck those things in the basket then add an assortment of frozen/fresh meat, fish and veg. I don't have a set day just usually when the food essentials have run out and find it hard to be creative with what's in and cross my fingers I haven't bought too much for the freezer.

MiloAndEddie · 12/08/2021 17:44

We have ours delivered on a Thursday evening.

We meal plan for the week but not for any specific day except Friday because that’s usually something easy: pizza/Kievs etc.

We then go to the butcher and greengrocer on a Saturday for meat and fruit and veg for the week. Works for us.
