Why is my 13 year old throwing up?

13 year-old suddenly started throwing up this morning. None of the rest of us (family of 7) are ill and he hasn't been anywhere or with anyone outside the household since Tuesday although he was swimming in a river then. But if it was that I would think he would have been ill yesterday.

I'm scared because last time he threw up he had taken an overdose 6 months ago. I've checked our medicine cabinet and it's still locked and I don't think anything is missing.

Norovirus is doing the rounds, or could be from the river water but I think I’d expect that to hit sooner.

Also delta variant can result in sudden onset vomiting, know someone this happened to.

It's from the river. There's a lot of bacteria in there that can mess with your gut

A lot of rivers are contaminated with sewage.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/08/2021 11:31

Yep could be the River. I remember a huge guide camp I was at in the 90s had to put warnings out after campers got ill from swimming.

My son vomited with covid a couple of weeks ago, he had a temperature and a a sore throat too but was only ill for a couple of days

Cornettoninja · 12/08/2021 11:52

Has he got any other symptoms? It could be one of a number of things (the river would be my first suspect tbh) but in the first instance treat it as you would any other vomiting bug. Keep an eye out for any more symptoms and talk to him in case there’s any non-visible symptoms.

If he’s alert and attempting small amounts of fluid to rehydrate try not to worry too much and let him rest.

Bug
Norovirus
River seems very likely
Covid

CutePanda · 12/08/2021 12:06

Any other symptoms? If not, could he be bulimic?

whenwillthemadnessend · 12/08/2021 12:17

I'd say river. My brother did a river swim challenge and was ill a few days after

Our rivers are minging.

FrenchMustard · 12/08/2021 12:21

I would also say its the river, look up weils disease

itsgettingwierd · 12/08/2021 12:22

I'd suggest contacting gp.

My sons a swimmer and some of his squad mates do open water and they get warnings about onset of symptoms (including vomiting) for up to 7 days after swimming.

Also I'd do a LFT if you have one as children seem to suffer vomiting with delta variant.

Thankyou everyone. He seems ok but it's hard to tell with him as he has autism so doesn't really speak much and is often quiet/withdrawn. He is eating a bit less than usual but no other symptoms. No vomiting since this morning.

Photo of the river. It doesn't look very clean.

Definitely swimming in the river.

MushMonster · 12/08/2021 22:31

As you mentioned swimming in a river, it happened with my little one years ago. Her symptoms were sorethroat though. Doctor said that it was the river water due to the trout season. There were small fish in the water indeed. It was around summer, so I think is the river water.
