Migranes are making me miserable, please tell me I’m not the only one!

I feel ridiculous that I haven’t contacted my Gp about it over the two years I’ve been having them pretty much once/twice a week but I’m now waiting for a call back.

I’m back at work after wfh due to covid with my sunglasses on which gets comments from every Tom Dick and Harry which is annoying. The migraines are triggered by light - changes to light, flashing light, driving at night with streetlights is next to impossible and my glasses are the only thing that prevents them from going full blown pain in bed for days with the lights off, they are the things keeping me a float at the moment so I’m not going to take them off for no one just because they think I look stupid with them on. I’d say about 75% pain reduction when I wear them.

I’ve had it bad for about two week constantly now; it ruined my holiday last week where I was constantly nauseated from it (I take migrane nausea tablets to control it), working in the dark at home and I feel so bad for the kids having to frequently walk around in a dark house!

Does anyone else suffer and how do you manage your day to day? My manager is making me go in to the office twice a week even though my job can be done from home and I dread the fluorescent lights in there, every week I’m having to brace myself to just accept I’m going to be in pain or feeling heady sick for a few days and it’s getting to the point now where it’s enough to make me want to call it quits.

Migraines caused by light disturbances are usually focal migraine and can be quite serious. Are you seeing zig zags as well and blurred vision? I really would see your Doctor as soon as possible. I suffer from classic migraine, severe one sided pain in temples and take sumatriptans. I get them weekly and I really feel your pain but the meds help me most the time. I have had focal migraine at various times too, it's awful.

I’ve been managing with painkillers, the sunglasses and nausea meds for some time now but when I contacted GP I did mention I’d like them to advise on some longer term medication to help prevention. I’ll see what they say.

I’ve had the odd occular one in my youth where i completely lost my vision (three times now, twice when i was driving!) but not had one of those for 5 years. (I’m 31 for reference).

These ones are different, I get the occasional blinking with my vision but not so much, maybe 10% of the time? I’m just very sensitive to light it makes me feel so sick.

I’ll look up focal migranes, it’s not a term I’ve come across yet

Oh I’ve just seen that focal and occular ones are essentially the same thing!

Low dose Amyltriptaline just before bed when I have a migraine really helps me.
Triptans just make me feel nauseous.

My migraines have improved so much sunscreen I started HRT.
It was low oestrogen that triggered mine along with stress and being overtired

Do you take the pill? I had more of the blind spot / zig zag migraines when I took the pill. My Dr at the time told me I couldn't have it anymore. That was decades ago. I'm not sure if that is still NHS policy but I have always just said I can't take the pill as I get migraines and I use non hormonal contraception (IUD).

idontlikealdi · 12/08/2021 10:00

Why on earth would you out up with this for two years without treatment?

Themadcatparade · 12/08/2021 10:06

I don’t take the pill no I’m on the implant. This is my fourth cycle of it.

Because I’m an absolute fool @idontlikealdi.

I have had some medical problems so I’m constantly feeling like I’m pestering my Gp, it’s just been on a long list of things I’ve been meaning to speak to them about. It was one of them ‘maybe I’m just stressed’ and ‘I’ll wait it out see if it gets better’. I do tend to over worry about things, I have health anxiety and panic over the smallest things so I’ve been telling myself it’s fine and I’m overreacting. Obviously with this one now it’s affecting my quality of life so it’s not something I can just turn a blind eye to.

It did improve this January for a few months until I got covid in may, ever since then they have been worse than ever so I’ve had no choice but to see someone about them.

I did go for an eye test back when it started as I thought it might have been my eyes, i mentioned it to the optician. My eyes are perfectly healthy it seems for my age.

I used to get hormonal migraines.to
Was advised to take magnesium daily. It's worked for me

bs191 · 12/08/2021 11:46

Hi, your doctor should be giving you Sumatriptan. It’s a miracle medication for me. I could have the worst migraine of my life and pop a sumatriptan and lay down and it goes away. Magnesium citrate daily helps too.

41sunnydays · 12/08/2021 12:00

You def need to see your GP

I was getting increased migraines and after a year finally spoke to GP who prescribed both a mild anti depressant to help with anxiety and stress, and sumatriptan for the headaches

These together have really helped me

Lovinghannah · 12/08/2021 16:44

I'm the same- extremely light sensitive and nothing helps.
I would check that no medication you're on is causing it.

A food diary might be useful. Also, I believe the UK weather has been awful. DM would get migraines from changing air pressure.
