I'm overwhelmed. Give me one job to do to help me get my house tidy.

I've been struggling with hugely minimises a few things recently, and my house is now at the point of 'where the fuck do I start', which is further affecting my MH.

On the back of another thread, and me waking up with a vaguely can-do approach this morning, please give me one task at a time so I can start to make a dent in it.

I've started already by making the bed properly, showering and getting fully dressed, soon to be followed by emptying and reloading the dishwasher. I'm also going to bung some washing in the tumble dryer.

Hoping you can give me the gentle kick up the bum you supportive bunch can to get me started, thanks vipers!

Well done!! I very often 'reset' my house before I go to bed. DH thinks emptying the dishwasher at 11pm is insane but I hate coming down in the morning to a ton of chores.

So if the dishwasher needs emptying I do it, reload, put on if needed. I reset the kitchen so it looks nice as it's the first thing you see when you come downstairs. I do the bins too if they need it, and make the sofa looks nice. Our house is all open plan so can look appalling with almost no help whatsoever.

Sounds like your on it @Couldhavebeenme2! I good tidy & sort always helps to clear your mind too, I feel.
On a longer term thing, have you come across the Marie Kondo book - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up? Sounds bonkers & takes a bit of time to do but it really is magic! It’s basically a huge organised declutter - a bit like a factory reset on your phone 😂 You do a big declutter & then you just maintain it.
Good luck OP - your day sounds productive already!

Floor swept, crud hoovered, spiders evicted
Floor mopped
Rug shaken and put in machine
Washing brought in, another load in dryer
Picture of accountability sent to BFF for lounge/disaster zone
Collection of marketplace stuff organised
Time for another cuppa

How's everyone else doing?

Well done!!

My first thing to do when I'm overwhelmed is to go around the whole house with a bin bag. It's so satisfying.

Amdone123 · 12/08/2021 10:26

@Couldhavebeenme2, yay ! Well done. You are smashing this housework lark.

GreatAuntEmily · 12/08/2021 10:49

Book an appointment at the recycling centre - presuming you still have to do that where you live - it's usually the next day or day after here. Then you find the stuff to take......

Sounds like you are smashing through the housework.

The hardest part is definitely starting. Upbeat music & listing tasks or starting in 1 room is my usual go to.

I have a "to do" app & it's quite satisfying to tick off jobs such as put away clean laundry / hoover downstairs rooms / mop kitchen.

Camomila · 12/08/2021 10:57

Well done OP!

I've been trying to do housework all day but the DC make mess quicker than I can clean

(in DS1s defence 90% of the destruction is caused by the 18m old).

Couldhavebeenme2 · 12/08/2021 12:03

Judgemental/optimistic iron and board put away.
Ironed and non-iron stuff taken upstairs and AWAY
Scatter cushions removed, washed and hung
Kitchen rug hung to dry
Final (until ds tidies his room) load of washing in
Ironing mountain tidied into tidy baskets
Hoover empied
Dead houseplant chucked
Dying houseplants watered
Shelves/side dusted
Hoovered

Just the ikea bag of doom to address, may leave that until after lunch...

This thread has motivated me to hoover. I'm quite sure how the floor gets so dusty so quickly. Laundry would be next, then DC1's bedroom needs a big declutter. I need to part with some books too.

Will report back

Peridot1 · 12/08/2021 12:41

You have made great progress. I’m having a similar day today. Have my sister and BIL and two DCs staying for almost two weeks now and the house is a mess! They have gone out for the day and I’ve stayed home to try to get a bit sorted. Love threads like this as they really help to motivate me.

So far

Dishwasher unloaded and reloaded and on
Towel wash done and in dryer
Kitchen tops cleaned and tidied
Tiles around cooker cleaned
Kitchen floor washed twice as realised it was really filthy
Dining and sitting areas and hallway vacuumed
Dining table tidied and wiped and placemats cleaned
Sitting area tidied
New side tables in place and moved big lamp into sitting area
Another load of laundry on

Had lunch and just having a cuppa and a sit down

Justonedayatatime11 · 12/08/2021 12:54

My house is a tip, my office looks like a clothes bomb went off in it and I'm laying in the middle of the floor eating toblerone. I need some motivation...

DueyCheatemAndHow · 12/08/2021 13:13

Sounds like you are doing brilliantly well!

One thing I find helpful is getting a laundry basket and taking it round with me, picking up everything that doesn't belong in that room and then putting it where it does. I can tidy a lot away quickly doing this

coodawoodashooda · 12/08/2021 13:24

@freshFortunes

I always start with the bathroom. It's usually the quickest and easiest, and it smells clean after so feels like an achievement. Then, I can look forward to a lovely long soak later on too Smile
Took me ages to figure this out.
Peridot1 · 12/08/2021 14:16

I feel I am on a roll!

Downstairs cloakroom cleaned
Dishwasher unloaded and reloaded again
Main bathroom shower and sink cleaned
Anti limescale tab soaking in toilet
Three loads of laundry folded and put away
Another load of laundry hung up to dry
Recycling bin and kitchen bin emptied

Quick vacuum, tidy and wiping surfaces down in utility room and shoes tidied and I’m done for today.

RestingStitchFace · 12/08/2021 14:28

Pick one cupboard or draw, put contents into the following categories:

Keep and back in drawer
Keep but in the wrong place - move to correct place
Chuck - bin
Chuck - charity shop

Aim to do one or 2 drawers or cupboards a day for 14 days.

Egghead68 · 12/08/2021 14:31

Shine your sink.

Then have a cup of tea.
