For me it’s:

Starter - soup/nachos/cheese board etc

Mains - chilli chicken strips/steak/burger/curry / lasagne / roast dinner etc

Dessert - pavlova/choc fudge cake/sticky toffee pudding/cheesecake

Either soup or something like tempura chicken for starter, a nice steak in peppercorn sauce or Caledonian or Balmoral Chicken for main and I'd tear your arm off for a good créme brûlée for dessert. (And maybe take one to go too!)

Unfortunately I can't bloody find anywhere that does creme brûlée these days.

Starter: panzella salad, or calamari - something light

Main: stuffed squid, or tuna steak, or any other fish dish. Side salad or rocket and Parmesan, or Greek salad.

Desert: something based around dark chocolate or citrus fruit.

Maybe cheeseboard to share right at the end too.

I want to eat this EVERY day.

Starter: Either some kind of bruschetta or mussels.

Main: Toulouse sausage with the amazing mash and veg they do at a French restaurant.

Dessert: The raspberry snowball delight ice cream sundae with raspberries, coconut snowballs, sauces and loads of whipped cream on top from my favourite Italian place.

knittingaddict · 12/08/2021 12:37

Cheese board to start? Is that a thing?

Never order soup, cheese board? or nachos as a starter. They sound very boring.

Rarely have room for pudding, but it would be bread and butter pudding if they have it.

Basically I order whatever sounds good on the menu. Mussels, fish and seafood are a winner for me.

knittingaddict · 12/08/2021 12:40

Lamb is good too, but never chicken because I think it's a fairly boring meat however you dress it up.

mrsm43s · 12/08/2021 12:45

Another one who's never seen a cheeseboard as a starter!

I'd probably go for:

Starter: either something fishy, seafood, or mushrooms. Maybe something cheesy like baked Camembert (but not a cheeseboad!)

Main: Either seafood, fish or steak

Dessert: Either nothing or a cheeseboard!

disculpe · 12/08/2021 12:59

@BarbaraofSeville 😁 As my main would be a really decent, spicy curry I'd have to go with popadoms! 🧞‍♂️

Over the last couple of weeks I've had;

Italian for lunch with DD

Frito misto
Spaghetti alle vongole
No pudding

Lunch at a pub that does great Korean food

Korean fried chicken, rice, kimchi.
Mango sorbet, strawberry and basil sorbet.

Lunch at a pan-asian restaurant with one of my sisters

Salt and pepper sea bass California rolls
Tempura squid
Korean beef skewers
Minimum and honey beef fillet tatare with a soy cured egg yolk
Salmon tataki with pony and truffle oil
Tuna sashimi
Deep fried rice squares with tuna and avocado.

Bento box sharing pudding with five different mini-puddings in.

Last night we went to a fancy grill restaurant of DD's chosing as it was her birthday.

Pisco Sour

Complimentary amuse bouche of hot tomato, basil and goat's cheese dip with warm bread.

Sticky Asian style belly pork

Shared a chateaubriand with DH, fries, confit tomatoes, green salad, Béarnaise sauce and blue cheese sauce (couldn't decide so had both!), side of long-stemmed broccoli with chilli and garlic, another side of tempura soft-shell crab. Argentinian malbec.

No pudding, had an espresso martini instead as was stuffed!

Off to a French brasserie tomorrow and modern British on Saturday where I will no doubt order something completely different. Love eating out.

ShrikeAttack · 12/08/2021 13:15

Minimum? Mirim!

ShrikeAttack · 12/08/2021 13:16

Also not pony, ponzu!

Must proof-read, bloody phone!!

Happy36 · 12/08/2021 14:06

idontlikealdi Here in France we eat our cheese before our dessert(s).

knittingaddict · 12/08/2021 14:14

Between main and dessert? Not as a starter though?

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 12/08/2021 14:19

Usually a starter I can share with the 9 year old, so chicken goujons, a different main every time, and panna cotta. The only time we actually eat in a restaurant, it's the Spaghetti House. Grin

Happy36 · 12/08/2021 14:21

knittingaddict Yes, between main and dessert.

For a casual meal you can have a platter of cheese, maybe also with charcuterie or pâté, perhaps some crudités, or when socialising informally with friends you might share a platter like that over drinks in a bar or at someone's home (the apéro) and then go on to a restaurant for dinner. However it's more common to see other stuff on apéro platters than straight up cheese. Gougères are good in winter, though.

knittingaddict · 12/08/2021 15:47

Yes, we frequently have meals like that Happy36. Not as a starter in a restaurant though, like op had.

SparklesandGold · 12/08/2021 15:51

I don’t usually have a starter unless I’m really really hungry.

I usually just have a main course and a dessert.

And no, I wouldn’t eat all those things I listed in one go, they are just things I’d generally have when I’m out on separate occasions Grin

RampantIvy · 12/08/2021 15:55

Starter - nothing
Mains Thai yellow curry or Massaman curry/chicken bhuna/rack of lamb/Balmoral chicken/any Greek or Turkish main/any Chinese or Japanese main/pizza - basically, I like most things.
Dessert - nothing

I'm not a competitive under eater Grin
Portions in my part of Yorkshire are very hearty

ryanbloodyair · 12/08/2021 16:17

Starter - paté

Main - pie with mash veg & gravy, or sausage and mash

Dessert- cheese board

Then a strong black coffee with a little chocolate mint

Oooo now I'm hungry!

Wishihadanalgorithm · 12/08/2021 16:29

Starter: calamari
Main: pork belly with crispy crackling, apple sauce and a range of veg or chicken katsu curry
Dessert: Eton mess or ice cream

Ipanemama · 12/08/2021 16:33

S: Thai fish cakes with peanut dipping sauce
M: any fish dish that I wouldn’t cook at home, Sole, Hake, Monk fish etc with potato gratin
D: sticky toffee pudding or treacle sponge with custard
Cheese lots of it.
Any dry rose wine from South of France

Shelovesamystery · 12/08/2021 16:43

Starter- seafood (prawns or calamari) or chicken strips/skewers

Main- pasta (bolognese or meatballs) or chicken and ribs or salmon

Dessert-anything with chocolate and caramel. There is a restaurant near me that does a sundae with chocolate ice cream, caramel sauce, cheesecake and brownies. It is literally my dessert heaven 😋

Drink- appletiser if I'm driving, white wine if I'm not

Hmmm I'm hungry now Grin

TheRebelle · 12/08/2021 16:48

Starter: fish or seafood, preferably prawns
Main: nicoise salad or club sandwich
Dessert: Rum baba

AtillatheHun · 12/08/2021 17:59

Nothing that I cook at home, so things with unusual / multiple ingredients or fish that I’d be scared to cock up. Desserts - the types with lots of components especially if grilled pineapple is involved

OoglyMoogly · 12/08/2021 18:10

Mushrooms on bruschetta
Goulash with rice and garlic bread
Baked cheesecake with semifreddo fruits of the forest.

Port and Stilton. 😋
