DP shoes are stinking- help

messybun101 · 11/08/2021 09:45

I'm not sure what he was thinking about this morning bringing them into the house but he has form
They were left at the back door where I've just walked down the stairs and been hit with a nuclear bomb
I've picked them up to throw them outside and they're soaking. He was gold panning in a couple of streams the other day. I suspect he may have had a few slips. The dog smelled similar but she's been scrubbed and so far so good

What do I do about these trainers?? I've put off letting DP put shoes in the washing machine as I'm confident he will break the drum washing 275627 pairs at once but I'm willing to take the risk with some MN help
Hints/tips to dry them would be great too. I have a tumble dryer that I can/will use. I'm not putting radiators on to dry the shoes and looking at our lovely Scottish sky, they won't be drying outside either...

Please help. The smell is stuck in my nose I'm desperate

Wash them on a gentle wash and stuff them with newspaper and put them somewhere warm to dry - hotpresss ?

I wouldn’t tumble shoes as it will wreck either the leather or the plastic and the noise would be horrendous?

messybun101 · 11/08/2021 10:06

Thank you so much
Do you think a 40 gentle should be hot enough to wash but cold enough not to melt? Then I'll use the stuffed newspaper to dry

Maybe each in a pillowcase to stop the washing machine noise? Or will I use less spin? I'd usually do a 1400 spin

Our washing machine has a sport shoes cycle, which we run at 40 degrees. We generally throw in one pair of trainers and either a towel or a coat (to deaden the noise).

Holyridonkulus · 11/08/2021 10:11

I put an old bath towel I use for the dog in the machine to help stop the constant banging and for the machine to balance the weight when it goes into spin

DonLewis · 11/08/2021 10:14

Put some sort of disinfectant in the rinse cycle, it should kill any bacteria that's making the smell. A 40 wash in its own won't do that.

longwayoff · 11/08/2021 10:15

Fill them with bicarbonate of soda, leave for a couple of hours then throw into the washing machine on 40 degrees. DON'T PUT IN TUMBLER. Stuff with newspaper- or j cloths or kitchen roll - and leave to dry.

Giantwaterbottle · 11/08/2021 10:17

I second putting them in with an old towel

TheProf · 11/08/2021 10:22

I've melted shoes at 40... I'd do a 20 with a slosh of disinfectant and a biological wash powder or liquid.

DrRichardBurke · 11/08/2021 10:24

In a pillowcase each.

Tie laces up first.

Not sure what the rest of your post is on about

messybun101 · 11/08/2021 10:25

Right!
Disinfectant and Bold on a 40 degree gentle wash (takes 50mins) with a couple of old towels to protect the machine and rid some noise
Do not tumble dry.
Ignore shrieks from DP later that shoes are not dry fast enough - the newspaper and J cloths will dry them in their own time

(Note to self: buy a machine like pp with a 'shoe cycle' next time!!!)

Thanks everyone

Stick them in a bucket with some washing powder. We did this for DP’s running trainers that had got wet and been worn with bare sweaty feet - it seems to have worked. Did a lot of googling and found the method on a running forum.

BrilliantBetty · 11/08/2021 10:40

Not 40, try 30 if you can, with disinfectant. Very gentle spin (600) stuff with kitchen towel after.

BrilliantBetty · 11/08/2021 10:41

If not drying fast enough he could blow them with hair dryer on cool setting

Bryonyshcmyony · 11/08/2021 10:42

Throw them away and tell him to wear wellies next time he wants to fiddle around in a stream

Adirondack · 11/08/2021 10:55

Tell him it is 2021 and high time he learnt how to use a washing machine and sort his own shoes out like the grown adult he is.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/08/2021 11:12

Make sure you wash some old towels as well as the shoes to balance the drum.

30 degrees cycle

Dry in the sun or somewhere warm.

shallIswim · 11/08/2021 12:58

Soak in zoflora first. Then washing machine. Did this for a pair of DH's particularly offensive trainersZ

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/08/2021 13:02

I never found machine washing them really got rid of the small! It goes for a few days but comes back..

Couldhavebeenme2 · 11/08/2021 13:09

Has he been to the gp/pharmacist about his stinky feet? Might be worth a try, could be some sort of fungus/bacteria going on which he (and his shoes) need treating for?

Whingey · 11/08/2021 14:38

You have my sympathy. Husbands feet nearly ate the odor eaters 😊

Elouera · 11/08/2021 14:45

I was going to suggest this too!

I wash DH's trainers in the washing machine too, but add a few towels to help stop them rattling around so much. Also use a fungal/medical wash detergent like dettol or canestan washing liquids.

newnortherner111 · 11/08/2021 14:47

Gold panning? Any luck with gold to fund the washing powder used?

Holyridonkulus · 12/08/2021 15:11

Update please OP. Has DP threatened divorce for ruining his shoes 😂

messybun101 · 12/08/2021 17:14

Thank you everyone for the helpful replies!
I did the wash then did it again. With disinfectant. Stuffed them with newspaper and the smell is gone. Hallelujah. I've sent him off with the hairdryer to do the rest of the drying.
They're not any more ruined than they were. They don't smell anymore. And the machine isn't broken. I'm so pleased

Apparently, he wore wellies. But when he fell in the river/stream the boots filled up and then he changed into his trainers to drive home. I very strongly suspect the part missing from the story is he kept the wet socks on. No way could a wet feet shoe change do this

He has 'gold fever' so I will teach him how to clean his own trainers because I don't think this will be the only time he gets wet shoes on his adventures and I'm unwilling to upkeep or be ambushed with that smell at the bottom of the stairs again

Unfortunately, the few small nuggets that he did find wouldn't be sold to repay the washing powder etc used. He's too attached to them
