DD (10) fractured wrist (maybe?) a&e visit 2

DD doing a holiday club with activities. First evening: roller skating booked (me 🤔 someone is going home injured).
Right at the end of skating a bigger kid fell on her and she hurt her wrist.
We went home, ice pack and Calpol and went to bed.

2am she’s crying with the pain.

Tried some things, ended up calling 111, going to a&e.
Much ‘lively’ activity at a&e with loads of police and young lads in cuffs (DD 😱).
Eventually had an X-ray, DD gets cornflakes for breakfast, doctor says no break.

We go home.

Called activity club to say not in today maybe tomorrow if she’s feeling up to it and went to bed.

Hospital calls. Re looked at X-ray there is a fracture come back in.

Have come back in to a full waiting room (people now queuing outside, we got seats luckily) - much debate over whether we have to join the usual queue or not. So far we have. Doctor on phone said we wouldn’t.
Hey ho we came prepared. Phones, chargers, books, snacks, etc.

Distal fracture recovery stories anyone?

Obvs activity week (other than the ‘abstract left handed’ art session) off the table. Have various family visiting from abroad next week - no swimming, climbing, etc. 😞

Will she still be in a cast for school? Big exam sept 18th - will she be writing by then?

Oh and dancing club booked for last week of holidays, guessing that’s off too?

🙇‍♀️🤦‍♀️🙄

Have moved to paediatric waiting area.

Pros - not very busy
Cons - Alvin & the Chipmunks unavoidable on tv

I'm just recovering from a distal radius fracture...lot older than your DD obviously!

Was in a cast for six weeks - couldn't hold a pen because the cast was in the way, and once it came off my hand wasn't strong enough to hold anything...

but your DD's bones will be a lot bouncier and more resilient, plus it sounds like a less full-on injury (if they couldn't see it first time) so they might just give her a velcro splint which is a lot easier to deal with.

On the plus side casts now come in all sorts of funky colours, and they are really light...

Thanks - glad you are recovering.

She has already had thoughts about cast colours!

I am concerned about the writing and school. Going back into Y6 (we live in a grammar school area so 11+ exams in September). Wonder if they’ll allow a scribe? Even if out of a cast by then.

Waiting until they decide what to put on before I start cancelling too much. Equally, when my DS broke his leg 10yrs ago we thought after the 6weeks he’d be fine, then they put another smaller cast on for another 6 weeks. And then he had to relearn how to walk.
His soft play party ended up months later (we’re all more used to postponing things now I guess).

My 14 year old has just had his cast off for this. Took 4 weeks to heal and although it slightly aches he's pretty much just got on with it.

LivingInABuildingSite · 10/08/2021 15:13

That’s good to hear thanks. 4 weeks takes us just to the start of term I think.

Still listening to Alvin - how many episodes can one channel play in succession?!

DD is doing fine luckily. Wondering if we’ll make to dinner & the arts session this eve…

If she's not able to write then maybe you could ask if she can use a keyboard - that was no problem at all, even with the cast, I was just a bit achey after a couple of hours, but for the 11+ it should be doable...

but as @bounce89 says, she may only have it on for four weeks and be fine afterwards!

Aged 7. Took six weeks. Plenty if wiggling fingers etc in the meantime to keep fingers mobile and strong. Piano exam taken at week 7 and passed. !

Barge - that’s amazing Re the piano exams! She’s meant to be doing one in December so loads of time for that.

Finally got to the plaster room for a temp cast.
Then sent back to a&e (I nearly cried) as they’d forgotten to make the follow up appt. but luckily they didn’t make me queue again for that.

Back to the fracture clinic on Tuesday.

Off to the evening activity of pottery painting ready for some abstract art lol. Plus lots of fuss to be made of her I’m sure.
