How to get soot from candle off walls

Was burning a candle this evening and realised after it has stained the walls with soot. How do I get it off safely?

Google says a dry cloth and a magic eraser this has taken a bit but not all of it.

Google also says not to wet it. So hoping someone on here will have a good way.

If not I will try rubbing alcohol tomorrow (also on google)

I can only assume it doesn't recommended getting it wet due to most wall paints being water based, OR, maybe it spreads the black soot?
Sorry I can't help, but a hopeful bump for you.

Enko · 10/08/2021 00:42

Yes says to not make it wet. Ty for the bump really hoping someone knows a good housekeeping trick here.

The bristly attachment on the vacuum cleaner?

Kanaloa · 10/08/2021 01:20

I was going to say a dry cleaning sponge but sort of brushing the wall rather than scrubbing it.

Bread! Seriously - rub it with a slice of white bread and it should come off. No idea why, but we had to do this once. I was very sceptical but it worked.

Janaih · 10/08/2021 08:36

Can confirm wetting it just spreads it around 😖

IamChipmunk · 10/08/2021 08:39

Yes, i can also confirm that you absolutely should not wet it! We ended up repainting the room...
Sorry, not helpful!

Clarkey86 · 10/08/2021 08:46

Oh gosh I feel your pain. I have no advice but we really need to redecorate our living room after wetting it!!

Soot contains grease which is why the advice is not to wet it. It's not just black dust. I'd be tempted to use alcohol on a magic eraser, but it's really important to work from the outside in to avoid spreading the mark. When we moved into our house one room was filthy from all the candles that had been burned in there.

Will try the white bread if nothing else ds age 19 will wolf down a white load (I am sensitive to wheat so white bread is rare in our house Grin)

Playdoh was originally created as a method of cleaning wallpaper back in the days when everyone still had coal fires. Maybe give that a go?!

Enko · 10/08/2021 19:51

Will consider thee playdoh but perhaps a white one?
