Tax credits when a partner moves in

Just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this question. I claim tax credits, my dp is about to move in as we are expecting a baby together but I have 2 children from a previous relationship that I claim for currently.

With DP's income combined with mine we won't be eligible for the tax credits any more which is fair enough. Do I just phone up and cancel them or are they going to expect me to pay back what I have had for this tax year?
I am a bit nervous that I am going to end up in a load of debt if they want it repaid. I am about to go on Mat leave so money will be tighter already.

You need to notify them of your change in circumstances with the effective date - you can do it online or phone them. They'll then adjust what your entitlement up to the relevant date should be and if that means you've been overpaid so far then you'd have to repay some, but it may not.

so if I tell them before he moves in I shouldn't have to pay anything back?

I am worried they will ask about what he earns and say I have to pay back what I was given so far this year.

Your tax credits will end when a partner move in no matter what the partners income is.

I updated online on the day my partner moved in.

I was no longer eligible which I knew I wouldn't be.

You won't be asked to pay back what you've earned so far this year unless your own earnings have increased significantly.

Ah thank you for the clarification. That has really put my mind at ease! I was so anxious that they would make me pay back what I've had so far.
My earnings will go down if anything because of my Mat leave.
