How long do you keep clothes for? People at work have made feel a bit shit

Work colleague was talking about her nephew earlier saying he’s started to get a bit mouthy. She said he’s 10 though so I guess it’s fairly normal. I said I’ve got clothes older than him and the 3 of them all looked rather shocked and said they can’t believe I’m wearing stuff that’s so old

Please tell me I’m not the only one

I probably have things that are older than you are.

Amima · 09/08/2021 15:24

It’s called vintage clothing.

Bananarama100 · 09/08/2021 15:25

Do not feel shit..... all it says about you is that you buy quality clothes and you look after them well!

ActonSquirrel · 09/08/2021 15:25

Well it really depends. I have items of clothing older than 10 years. But they were not cheap and were good decent items of clothing. Also clothes that don't get worn much.

If they are buying fast fashion and clothes that fall to pieces in a few washes eg primark then no wonder their stuff is so new.

Hotchox · 09/08/2021 15:25

Same here, fair few clothes older than my kids. In fact, a couple of items are from the last millennium. I don't need spangly new clothes to look good.

DoucheCanoe · 09/08/2021 15:26

Until it's wrecked, I don't like it or it doesn't fit.

LadyJaye · 09/08/2021 15:26

I still have my rugby socks from my time playing for my uni team.

I'm 42.

putthebinsout · 09/08/2021 15:27

Everyone I know has clothes as old and older than 10 years

heldinadream · 09/08/2021 15:27

I recently started re-wearing a cardigan I bought (in Asda!) probably thirty years ago. I stuffed a cushion with it and found it recently. I'm in love with it all over again!
They are being ridiculous anyway - I've got clothes older than him is just banter.

EL8888 · 09/08/2021 15:27

Why get rid of decent quality clothes that still fit? It’s expensive and bad for the environment. I have some clothes from the 90’s so lm a bad person to ask!

SomethingWycked · 09/08/2021 15:27

Refer them to Greta Thunberg:

Hellocatshome · 09/08/2021 15:28

I still wear a t shirt I bought when I was 16 im 37 now. Fair enough I now only wear it for bed. Its actually very environmentally friendly to use your clothes for as long as possible.

Housewife2010 · 09/08/2021 15:28

My husband's gardening sweatshirt is over 30 years old. I have clothes from the last century and I would definitely wear them if I could fit into them!

torquewench · 09/08/2021 15:29

I'm currently wearing a pair of jeans that I bought before I moved house in 2008. And I have a cardigan on the back of my work chair that I bought when I started a new job in 2000. It still looks like new, which is testament to how good Next used to be. And a set of bike leathers that are at least 20 years old but appear to have shrunk considerably since they were new Grin

MrsCatE · 09/08/2021 15:31

I’ve got stuff much older than that and proud of it! Proves it’s quality that counts and on a pay per wear basis, more economical in the long run. I’ve got a Vivienne Westwood coat that I bought in a sale 20 years ago - and always get nice compliments from random strangers (normally women) every time I wear it!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 09/08/2021 15:32

I've got Primark stuff from early 2000s that's still going. I don't care whether stuff is fashionable though.
I'll agree about old Next - my comfiest work trousers are ~2008/9 from there. I just mend the hems and sew buttons back on.

elastamum · 09/08/2021 15:32

I have clothes that are older than my 22yr old DS. I still wear them. I have also decided not to buy any more clothes this year, as I am trying to break my consumer mindset. Have not bought anything since I retired. Much better for the planet and for my bank balance.

AlmostSummer21 · 09/08/2021 15:32

I have loads of clothes older than him, plenty older than you probably!

It doesn't really count as I can no longer fit in them, but I have a couple if things from the 60's that were my mums & if I could fit into them, I'd still wear them!

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 09/08/2021 15:33

No, you're far from the only one. Who would chuck out perfectly wearable clothes ?

Freshprincess · 09/08/2021 15:33

My oldest item is a jumper I bought when I was a student from H&M when it used to be called Hennes. I’m 50
I’ve got clothes older than some of my colleagues and they’re a lot older than 10

Scarby9 · 09/08/2021 15:35

If they weren't just being thoughtless, I'd be tempted to comment that I was surprised they were part of the throwaway society.
Reuse, repair, recycle... in that order.

BritishSummertime · 09/08/2021 15:35

I've got work clothes that are prob 10-15 yrs old because they are worn less frequently & less fashionable so have staying power.

I felt really bad on the 'how much do you spend a month on clothes' thread because it's probably about £50 a year & there were people spending hundred+ a month. My job is a boring office job & no one cares what I wear at home really, i assume if I worked for vogue I'd spend more 🤣

speakout · 09/08/2021 15:35

Same as others- I have clothes possible older than you OP.
I cherish my old clothes, some of my favourite things- and love it that they still fit!

Also many of the clothes I wear were bought in charity shops- no idea how old they are!

FreeBritnee · 09/08/2021 15:37

I’m wearing a cardigan I bought for my Nan’s funeral around twenty years ago. We are not short of money. It’s still quite flattering so i wear it 🤷‍♀️

ShowOfHands · 09/08/2021 15:38

I have clothes from when I was a teenager. I'm wearing 22yr old shoes today. My favourite trousers I bought 25yrs ago when I was 15.

Your colleagues are weird.
