Have you ever seen an older child or adult with a really flat head?

My DD is 18 months old and she has severe brachycephaly - the back of her head is very flat. She was extremely refluxy when she was smaller and tummy time got quite distressing for both of us, so unfortunately I didn't do it much. The health visitor just said not to worry and that her head would round out once she started sitting up.

Unfortunately it just hasn't. She's been to the GP and anything medically wrong has been ruled out, but the GP did admit that it's very noticeable. I try to remind myself that it's just cosmetic and that we are lucky, but sometimes I feel sick with guilt over it because she'll probably get bullied. It's too late for a helmet now so nothing can be done. I went to a toddler group with her yesterday and was so conscious of all the round heads, I'm sure people stare at her and judge us.

My friend keeps telling me to stop stressing about it, and asked me if I've ever looked at someone else's head and thought it was a funny shape (which I haven't!). So is it likely to be noticeable when she's older or am I really stressing over nothing?

I have a really flat head, it’s not really rounded at all at the back. It’s never bothered me and nobody comments… I am 56 now, so I am sure people would have commented by now if it was noticeable !

I had one toddler with this, as did my friend. Both have totally normal rounded heads now. It did resolve itself, I wish I had lost less sleep over it.

My friend's daughter had a really wonky head.. totally flat on one side and it made her whole face look a bit strange..skewed.
Fast forward to school age... and you can't tell at all :)

My dd has a slight flatness to the side at the back since she was small, i was told it would resolve i had to practice tummy time and moving her head to face the opposite way when she slept ect. Soon as she could roll over she has always slept on on front! Its the most comfortable position for her. So i assumed it would get better and they told me it would after a few months once she was more active and sitting up (she done all that early) Shes 12 months now and its still flat which is worrying. The fact she doesn't ever sleep on her back makes me wonder if it will ever change. I have fine hair so does her big sister, so i do worry it will be noticeable when shes older. Not sure wether to take her to the drop in clinic about it but then what can they offer her apart from a helmet. Will she will absolutely hate!

Which* she will absolutely hate.

Firstly.. There is very little to no evidence to suggest helmets work.

My daughter has an odd shaped head. I used to notice it a lot. Now she has more hair, it's not so noticeable.

Hi there. I'm just wondering if your little girls head corrected itself over time? I've just read your post and this is exactly us now although my little girl is 13 months. Would appreciate you sharing an update if you're able to please 🙏🏼

Hi @nataliecw88
My little girl is now 5 and has a completely normal looking head!! The biggest improvement has been within the last two years. It is absolutely not noticeable now. In our case, a helmet would have been a complete waste of money!

These companies who flog helmets, pray on worried parents.

When DD was small her head looked like it was on a right angle .. lol

Oh wow what a relief for you all! I'm so glad it all worked out. Thanks for replying and offering some reassurance 🙏🏼

@nataliecw88 I'd be happy to email you a photo of my daughter's head when she was 1 and now, age 5 if you like. I remember being soooo anxious and frantically searching for pictures of babies with flat heads and how they looked when a bit older! If you'd like me to do that then DM me your email address x

Hi there! I am just working through a similar issue with my daughter who is 2. When she was a baby, I took her to 3 different physios and all seemed quite unphased by her flat spot, however I can still notice it especially when her hair is wet. I have found it difficult to find any pictures of older children (especially girls) who had a flat head when they were babies. I would be interested to see what your daughter looks like now she is 6 if you felt comfortable sharing. Thankyou so much :)

Hi. I did pm this user a few days ago as I only came across the reply a few days ago. Not yet had a reply but will hopefully hear soon 🙏🏼

I would love to see some pictures of some toddlers and adults head development. My son is turning 2y now and I feel so anxious and guilty because he still has a wider head in the front and a flat back, he sleeps in his sides since he is 4 months with barely any change.@nataliecw88 @AugustSeptemberOctober

I still haven't heard from the original author of the post sadly.
I have an appt at pediatrics on Monday about my daughters head so I can perhaps update this post after. In all honesty, my daughters head is not as flat as it was at 6 months but definitely not as round as her peers.
