Packed lunch ideas for fussy eaters who won't eat sandwiches!

Hi there

So my 12 year old will not eat sandwiches or wraps makes life very hard! Only marmite toast and bagels.

I spend many hours hours making pesto pasta for only half to be eaten - it's boring.

Any ideas for packed lunches I can put in a thermo mask? Not soup (he don't eat soup 😬😬)

Thanks so much

Batch cook pasta too. I'd never be doing it every day. And yes make him do his own lunches. Might start being less fussy

Great tips thank you!!!

Yes he will ear casserole (at a push)

Actually as we head into autumn when they go back need to get my slow cooker out again

As they will eat toast will they eat a sandwich made with toasted bread? Or as spotty suggests Warburtons' thins? Bagel thins?

Crackers, cheese and pickles. Chicken drumsticks/thighs. Crudites with hoummous. Sausage rolls, boiled eggs. Savoury rice (I would never wish cous cous on anybody.

Second the bento box idea. Neither of mine will eat sandwiches (I wouldn't as a kid either so I can't really complain!)
Mine just get fairly random stuff in theirs, as long as they like stuff and it's vaguely healthy I don't worry too much about it being a coherent meal. So they get hummus, breadsticks, crisp bread, rice cakes, falafel, tuna, cheese, fruits, veg sticks etc

He's 12 and definitely old enough to make his own packed lunch. If he's that fussy then make him come up with his own brilliant ideas, or else go hungry.

Chilli works well in a thermos.

Casseroles (with dumplings perhaps for carbs?) work too.

Risottos/orzottos (risotto with orzo and therefore a stupid name!).

What about cold rice with things in that he likes? Or cold pasta?

Cheese and crackers, colds meats etc.

As well as Ben's rice iceland do rice in individual bags that take 3-4 mins in the microwave.

They have plain rice, vegi rice, spicy rice. They also do Quinoa and cauliflower rice.

They also do 'meal in a bag' things like chicken and pasta but I've not tried them.

Hard boiled eggs, cherry tomatoes, cheese cubes, mini pork pies, pickled onions, celery, chicken drumsticks, coleslaw.

Sorry forget the eggs😀. Chipolata sausages are good done in a sticky sauce, am& S have a great range of deli items suitable for picnics.

He’s 12! Why are you doing it? Take him to the shop to choose some things he’ll eat (that are healthy) then he can do the rest.

Agadorsparticus · 08/08/2021 11:33

My sandwich dodger ended up with beige buffet snacks, sausage rolls, cherry tomatoes, mini scotch eggs etc. Not very healthy but at least it gets eaten.

Ninkanink · 08/08/2021 11:33

If he’ll eat bagels why doesn’t he just have that?

For the flask:

Do Singapore-style noodles night before, and keep leftovers for his lunch next day

Batch cook veggie chilli, freeze in small portions, defrost overnight in fridge and mix with half a packet of microwave long grain rice, heat in microwave.
