Opened the bin to discover maggots 🤢🤮 absolutely hate them and never had them before, we are due to get the bins emptied they morning, will they bin men still empty our bin? Once they hopefully do that we will bleach and scrub ☹️

Same here. We poured in some water and topped it down the drain in the road. Another time, the bin men emptied them all out along with the food waste so you may be ok!

Theworldisfullofgs · 07/08/2021 20:04

Bin men will pick it up. You could kill them with boiling water first. The birds will eat them

mineofuselessinformation · 07/08/2021 20:15

Just leave them.
When the bin's empty, Chuck in a few kettles of boiling water and then tip it on your grass (if you have it, otherwise a hard surface will do). Leave bin tipped up to drain and dry.

I’d just open the bin, I couldn’t pour boiling water over a living Creature like you see on here all the time or bleach.

PivotPivotPivottt · 07/08/2021 20:36

Same I opened the bin this morning and it was crawling with them I've never seen anything like it 🤮. I sprayed them with bleach and boiling water but it hasn't done anything. The bin is full so I can't even fill it with water and tip it over.

TheWeeDonkey · 07/08/2021 20:44

We got this during the recent hot weather. Once the bin men have been pour boiling water and some bleach into the bin. The fumes will kill anything off. Then pour it out and disinfect the bin. I jet washed it too because it was actually pretty manky.

Babyg1995 · 07/08/2021 20:48

I had this for the first time ever horrible wonder if its to do with the hot weather

mayblossominapril · 07/08/2021 20:50

Just wait until your bin is empty and then swill it out. Don’t use bleach or other chemicals as the birds will eat the maggots. They love maggots.

Dinnaehinksae · 07/08/2021 20:52

For future reference, you can buy a thing called bin buddy. I got it on amazon and it really works. Keeps the bin smelling better and I've had no maggots at all since I started using it.

user97495 · 07/08/2021 20:58

Make sure you keep the bin closed, it's flies getting in and laying eggs that causes it (I think)

Oh come on 🙄🙄🙄

I think it’s quite come in the warm weather OP, boiling water should do the trick.

whatagloriousthingtobe · 07/08/2021 21:04

God they make my skin crawl. The bin men just tip the contents out and most of the maggots should go with them. We get our bin cleaned now by a company after everytime it's emptied as I just cannot deal with them

PigletJohn · 07/08/2021 21:09

The poor binmen are used to it.

I don't suppose you have a daily newspaper, but wrapping moist food products, especially meat, will prevent flies getting to them, and help absorb the juices. Potato peelings are especially bad when they rot.

No need for bleach or boiling water. You can wash out with water and tip on the ground, the water will drain away and birds will gobble any remaining maggots.

Washing out the bin will also remove any sticky sugary traces that attract flies.

userxx · 07/08/2021 21:12

Put food waste in a compostable bag before chucking in the bin. These are provided by the council round here.

Stef92 · 07/08/2021 21:16

We had this the other week. My husband and in-laws cleaned our bin out using boiling water and double bagged our rubbish, and took it to the tip as our bin only gets taken every 2 weeks. They tipped the dead maggots onto the grass for the birds to eat. This took them hours to do, I got out of assisting as was getting our baby off fo sleep 🤣

PivotPivotPivottt · 07/08/2021 21:38

My bin lid has a big crack on it I assume that's not helping the matter 🤦🏻‍♀️

worriedatthemoment · 21/09/2021 00:35

Did bin men pick up bin ?
Ds brought bins round earlier in the dark, just went out to put bin bag in that was in kichen as being collected tomorrow and the bin was crawling with maggots all over the top , down the sides and when I lifted the lid under there
Tried boiling water , sprayed with dettol spray after to clean bin as the maggots all just wasned off with water but then all started going up the path, so tipped more boiling water and a little washing up liquid to try and wash them away .
Still some in the bin will the bin men take ?
My neighbour has been using ny bin lately and must have put food waste in as we use our food waste bin.
I have purchased some straps for after emptied as hes been using them for couple months and we don't always spot it if kids take out bin bag just notice the bin seems to fill too quick
His bin is teaming with flies and maggots and mine was right next to his
Its now pitch black and they are all over the road / path out the front and I have done my best to wash them away
3 weekly bin collection around here is not working

LaBellina · 21/09/2021 00:41

Probably due to hot weather. Bleach is your friend here.

Anycrispsleft · 21/09/2021 05:10

I've had them twice this summer, in my food bin. Cleaned it all out but they came back. The lid is slightly warped so doesn't make a good seal, that's how they get in. I really don't want to clean it again. It's surely DH's turn but I might end up doing it myself anyway as he won't carefully tip the bin water down the drain like I do, there'll be maggots on the driveway, and the neighbours will have conniptions.

LaBellina · 21/09/2021 05:16

Op another tip, we throw left over meat and vegetables in the bin at the last moment, right before it’s getting emptied. We put any left overs in plastic bags and store them in the freezer before they get thrown out.
