Why did the light turn itself on?

Last night, I went to bed with all the lights off. Obviously. I woke up half an hour after falling asleep, with a jolt. I then saw that the bedside lamp was on.

It's one of those touch lamps where you tap the metal part to turn it on and off. I absolutely, definitely, did not and could not have touched it in my sleep. It's not easy to reach from the bed.

I was a bit freaked out but also I know there must a rational explanation. Can anyone help me? I tried Googling and some people seem to suggest these lights are sensitive and even dust can turn them off. But this has never ever happened before, and I've had this lamp for ten years.

What's going on?

Has the time reset on the microwave? I've got Hue bulbs and they all turn on after a power cut.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/08/2021 16:32

poltergeist

GreatAuntEmily · 07/08/2021 16:32

Was it raining perhaps if humidity is high it can switch it on.

bluedomino · 07/08/2021 16:32

I used to sleep walk and turn lights on.

loveliesbleeding1 · 07/08/2021 16:34

My bedside lamp used to do this and it really freaked me out, I changed my lamp to a switched one and it hasn’t happened since. I would think it’s some sort of fault.

BingoFucklinger · 07/08/2021 16:34

My daughter's lamp did this the other day scared the shit out of me. Turned out the plug wasn't pushed all the way into the socket and the loose connection was making it temperamental.

Either that or it's a poltergeist.

Arsebucket · 07/08/2021 16:47

Mine did this when I was tossing and turning unable to sleep.

A fucking massive moth had landed on the other side.

I would rather it had been a ghost.

I couldn’t sleep at all knowing the bastard thing was in the room.

magimedi · 07/08/2021 16:53

Drop in power supply can cause this. They also turn on afte a power cut.

I don't mind moths but I would much rather it was a ghost than a spider.

We had a pair of these many years ago. Worked really well for a few years and then started turning themselves on and scrolling through the settings all on their own. We thought there was a fault so got rid and got some manual switch on ones.

Starburst8 · 07/08/2021 17:08

I had a touch lamp and it was constantly doing this throughout the evening and during the day, (when I wasn't in the room)
I figured it was just too sensitive and decided when to turn on by itself. I suppose the electrical current running through could possibly cause a disturbance? (maybe I'm clutching at that 😂)
Anywho I got fed up and went back to a standard lamp, no issues now.

Thanks everybody! I did wonder if it was a mouse or similar, but decided not to pursue that line of thought. Too awful.

Moth is the explanation I think I'll go with. I don't love moths but it's fine. I think I'll unplug the light tonight!
