Two adults. No kids. Which would you recommend?

Do you like castles or art? Also possibly weather dependent... V&A Dundee looks good. Stirling Castle looks interesting, plus Wallace Monument. Not had time to sample food options at either thanks to Covid!

DuesToTheDirt · 06/08/2021 18:33

The Jute museum in Dundee is interesting. I'd look at the particular attractions in each place and see which you prefer.

Babdoc · 06/08/2021 18:33

OP, ask Mumsnet to transfer this thread to Scotsnet. You’ll get much more advice from locals.

CormoranStrike · 06/08/2021 18:36

Personally I prefer Stirling. I’d do the castle and old town jail, drive to Dunmore Pineapple for a picnic in the grounds, then out to the Kelpies and walk to and from the Falkirk wheel (five miles each way).

As others have said it depends what you're into but I really like Dundee. If you like art, you might enjoy the V&A, Dundee Contemporary Arts or the McManus Gallery and there's a street art trail too I think.
If history is more your thing then there is, as mentioned, the Verdant Mill jute museum and the Discovery ship.
There are several nice cafes and pubs especially around the regenerated bit near the waterfront.

ClaraThePigeon · 06/08/2021 18:48

Thank you all. I forgot about Scotsnet. We love art and history.

Dundee! Shops, cafes, art, scenery etc

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 06/08/2021 18:56

Dundee! V and A, lunch at Gidi Grill at City Quay then up to Macmanus Galleries via the Overgate for a bit of shopping.

ClaraThePigeon · 06/08/2021 19:23

Thank you all for the advice

Dundee, I would think about the Discovery Point and the V and A, both beside each other.

ClaraThePigeon · 06/08/2021 19:44

Thanks all. I think we might go to Dundee this time and Stirling in a few weeks.

If we do go to Dundee, is Broughty Ferry worth a visit?

Stirling Castle - the new tapestries and the painted heads are stunning.

We were a bit disappointed with the V&A - there is an awful lot of wasted space inside. Love the McManus museum.

reprehensibleme · 06/08/2021 19:48

Yes to Broughty Ferry - well worth a visit.

Undersnatch · 06/08/2021 19:48

Yes, broughty ferry has lovely shops to mooch in and a great ice cream shop!

Funnylittlefloozie · 06/08/2021 19:48

Stirling is really nice, though. Its a lovely little place and I feel i must speak up for it. The Falkirk Wheel is incredible and the Kelpies are a must-see.

ClaraThePigeon · 06/08/2021 19:51

Thanks all.

FunnyLittleFloozie. I'll definitely visit Stirling too in a few weeks. I'm looking forward to both.

Is Visocchi's the ice cream place in Broughty Ferry?

OP posts:
XDownwiththissortofthingX · 06/08/2021 20:01

Yes, Visocchi's

ClaraThePigeon · 06/08/2021 20:03

Thank you.

Ooh yes, the Discovery, how could I forget, when I love tales of Antartic adventures!

Classica · 07/08/2021 20:53

I believe they're opening an Eden Project in Dundee! Obviously it's a way off so isn't particularly useful info right now but a V&A and an Eden Project in one small city seems impressive.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 07/08/2021 21:48

They'll be in easy walking distance from each other too, so it'll be great for days out or weekend trips.

LaLaFlottes · 07/08/2021 22:57

When you go to Stirling if you go to the Wallace Monument which is on the outskirts, take a wander through Bridge of Allan. Cute little town with an amazing fish and chip shop which also has the best ice cream - Allan Water Cafe.

paddlingon · 08/08/2021 00:19

The falkirk wheel and Kelpies are the most impressive tourist attractions in that part of Scotland.

Both Dundee and Stirling are worth visiting but I think Dundee has more in it.
