Any advice for entertaining a sporty teen now on crutches?

She's done something Very Bad to her knee
She rides, swims, cycles, runs and plays football
Has no hobbies other than sport.
She's got at least a fortnight in crutches trying to weight bear as little as possible
She will watch TV and that's it.

Other siblings and I are trying to think of things she might enjoy doing.

Card games? Poker is very competitive & psychological. Gamble for Haribos. Mancala, UNO, Backgammon.

Sho'ha'penny. Seated darts. Operation. Skittles.

purplesequins · 05/08/2021 13:42

next few days - watch all of the olympics

learn chess.
long running games like settlers of catan
puzzles
painting by numbers

then, depending on the injury and advice from dr of course, slow 'dutch speed' cycle rides to move that knee without weight baring?

Borrow a wheelchair and get her basket-balling or racing that way.

ODFOx · 05/08/2021 13:52

Or if you have a well trained pet or willing younger sibling who can retrieve the dropped balls: she could learn juggling or poi?

Bryonyshcmyony · 05/08/2021 13:52

@ODFOx

She would love that! If it turns out she's non weight bearing for more than a couple of weeks definitely doing this

Card games also a good shout
I don't know any apart from very basic ones so any instructions welcome

Ouch poor kid! Presumably the knee needs to be kept still to heal, you can't bundle her into a soap box and go rattling down hills?

Could you attempt a rowing boat trip?

Chair yoga.

Erm. Is she old enough to drink yet?

Givemestrengthorgin · 05/08/2021 13:54

Watch the Olympics!
Take her out for wee trips in the car if mobility of het knee allows it and stop at a nice spot for a picnic.

Bryonyshcmyony · 05/08/2021 13:55

No she's 15! At the moment it's incredibly painful so no soap boxes yet

Card Games:

Blackjack is very simple. I taught my 7yr old cousin to play it when I was 13.

Go Fish is very easy to play -- my kids of all ages can enjoy this a lot.

Crazy 8s is nearly as easy to learn.

Uno is really easy and fun when you get the hang of it. You can pay it with a normal pack of cards instead of buying the branded ones.

Crafty things that may or may not appeal: paint by numbers, Hama beads, Fimo clay (can make earrings, if that’s her thing), crochet hook and tutorial videos on YouTube, those diamond picture things.

Puzzle book (the sort you get at the newsagent)?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/08/2021 19:59

You could introduce her to resistance band exercises or small dumbbells?

Good for maintaining strength in arms, stretching out the shoulders and arm/chest muscles after the effort of weightbearing on crutches, maintaining core strength, flexing her foot and using her other leg muscles without affecting her knee. It'll give her a head start on Physio as well.

Does she have a knee brace, or is she just expected to not move it? The former does help a lot, as do cold packs (also useful for lobbing at annoying siblings once they've defrosted).

waltzingparrot · 05/08/2021 20:02

I'd second 'learn chess' . It's a game for life and they can all play each other online.

Nail art

Read Pride & Prejudice and then watch the film.

My sporty teen got very good at sofa basketball when he had a bad leg. You get one of those little over door basketball hoops position the sofa in the right way and then sit there shooting away. We did have a willing toddler to keep bringing the balls back though, I imagine its less fun if you have to get them yourselves.

Maybe I can train the lab to do it!

Darts!! My really sporty dd broke her leg at the same age and someone gave her a dart board - we had endless games, friends round for games, my dad had a darts board so then they zoomed playing round the world (think that’s what it’s called) darts. Honestly best we could do for a competitive teen.

Also had table tennis, which we all played sitting down…

Brilliant idea!

We watched lots of tv. Nothing else was good enough as the real sport.
