Cheltenham recommendations

Pinkcadillac · 04/08/2021 20:09

I'm planning a weekend in Cheltenham soon, have found a room in the Queens Hotel that looks OK (not a lot of choice given the short notice). Does anyone have any recommendations for places for coffee, lunch, dinner? We like relaxed places, with good wine, happy to pay £££ as we are not doing much else this summer... Thanks!

Gin and Juice is great for cocktails and is pretty much right in front of your hotel!

Pinkcadillac · 04/08/2021 20:53

Thank you! they sound great. Off to google now!

Mowglis opening soon at the Brewery. I loved Mowgli in Liverpool.

If you haven't booked accommodation yet the Malvern on Cleeve Hill was a lovely B and B we stayed at a few years ago.

John Gordon’s on Montpellier, come out of your hotel, turn left and turn back on yourself to go up Montpellier. John Gordon’s is across the road. It’s a Gin and Whisky bar with a friendly relaxed vibe. They also do good coffee.

On Montpellier roundabout is Primavera, a lovely Italian restaurant.

Kjr33 · 05/08/2021 11:05

Hotel du vin is nice for food and cocktails too and there was a place near the fire station? but I think a wander up and down Montpellier will find you something that suits you

Catnuzzle · 05/08/2021 11:10

121, the Ivy, Brasserie Blanc.

Kjr33 · 05/08/2021 15:17

And then off to moo moo’s

@TheCarryingBag

Also, The Beehive in Montpellier Villas is a pretty nice pub.
Love the Beehive! Had my son's christening party in the room upstairs.
VeganVeal · 05/08/2021 16:35

I would say the Gold Cup pub, but sadly its been knocked down

hellcatspangle · 05/08/2021 16:39

We had a really nice thai meal in a Victorian pub called the vine (they have a website)

DareDevil223 · 05/08/2021 19:58

KIbou in the Regent's Arcade if you like Japanese food, it's amazing.

Geepee71 · 05/08/2021 20:14

Mehsahib gin and tea in the Prom, amazing food!
Just down the road from Queens Hotel too.

AvantGardening · 05/08/2021 20:30

The Railway does Thai street food.

I think The Ivy in Cheltenham is underwhelming and overpriced for what it offers.

I haven’t been for a couple of years but the Daffodil used to be good if you just want classic British type food and cocktails in nice surroundings.

Rushhomeroad · 05/08/2021 20:43

Second the Daffodil - very beautiful and often has live music throughout the day to listen to whilst you eat or drink.

Pinkcadillac · 05/08/2021 22:28

Lots of suggestions, thank you!!

The Curious Café for breakfast and I second Gin and Juice at 131 for pre dinner cocktails.

NotYourHolidayDick · 05/08/2021 22:44

131 is nice for dinner. Lumiere is also good. Personally I prefer heading out of town and going to proper pubs like House in the Tree and The Old Spot.

Loads of good bars and clubs on the prom.

Walk from your hotel to Bath Road for nice cafes for lunch. The Curious Cafe is amazing for breakfast. Morans is worth a look too.

Then pop into the Exmouth and give me a wave Grin

131 and the gin and juice bar are fab for great food and amazing cocktails in lovely surroundings, but I do find their service a bit lacking. I put up with it for the amazing gin menu in Gin and Juice though! If you want to eat it’s best to book, as the queues are down the road most evenings at the moment.

The Clarence social is great for a drink - they have a secret speak easy room downstairs which is fun too (if you can’t work out how to get in, hang around outside the loos! Wink)

Baker and graze (The Suffolk’s, just off Bath Road) do the best pastries (sourdough almond croissants are amazeballs - they sell out pretty early) and good coffee. The coffee dispensary (Regent St) and The Scandinavian Coffee pod also have great coffee.

There’s also Ritual Coffee on Landsdown industrial estate - not pretty surroundings, but it’s cool inside. Great coffee, and there’s a
Bakery van there every Saturday, and The Woozy Pig there most sundays (amazing brunch buns,
The truffle and bacon dusted tater-tots are the bomb!)

If you can’t tell, I’m a coffee snob - I only really drink decaf and like proper coffee places where they actually put some thought and care into their decaf beans too!

MissyB1 · 06/08/2021 13:13

I've just been to Boho cafe (great Norwood Street just off Suffolk Road). Its a waffles and pancakes cafe, lovely!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 06/08/2021 13:18

Both my suggestions have already been mentioned. We loved the Coconut Tree, very down to earth and a great vibe. No 131 was great too, there'd been some damning reviews on TripAdvisor which almost put us off, but we went anyway ans had a great experience.

mynameisbrian · 06/08/2021 13:22

Just come back from cheltenham. The queens hotel is actually really lovely and do a fabulous breakfast. There are alot of choices to eat, The Ivy is great, I enjoyed the Brasserie Blanc too.
