I'm so scared. I know no one can help but I need a hand hold. My 18 yr old DD has been admitted today following severe chest pain, blood in phlegm a contrast CT has shown a clot in each lung. She had a heavy cold around 10 days ago but seemed on the mend (all Covid tests negative), then started with a cough 2 or 3 days ago. Saw GP this am after the pain got much worse and he sent her straight to the hospital. She's had a blood thinning injection and is now in a side room on a ward. I was able to drop off some stuff to her before she moved up to the ward so saw her briefly and she's in so much pain. I'm so terrified. She's only 18 but having to deal with this all alone. It is inhumane that I cannot be with her. I only know what is happening when she texts me and in between i am worrying myself sick.

My mum died of a PE only 3 months ago following hip surgery.

I just don't understand how this can be happening. I'm sat in the car park at the hospital and don't know what to do with myself.

Glad you’ve spoken to the dr and I hope your dd makes a swift recovery. My dd is just 18 and a young one at that. Can’t imagine how you’re feeling Flowers. Sorry for your recent loss too x

Yes, PEs can cause lung damage as can DVTs or clots elsewhere in the body - they prevent bloodflow in those areas and the tissue is damaged. It took me at least a year to feel fully well afterwards. They were very thorough at the hospital - I can remember at least a lung scan and ECG (I was tachycardic on admission) - I'm sure there were others but I cant recall now as it was twenty years ago.

OP, haven't RTT so apologies if already mentioned by PPs. Hopefully your DD has passed the point of maximum risk of mortality such as from heart damage and will respond well to treatment. Has any of your family had any screening for genetic clotting disorders if your DM and DD both had PEs? Haven't read the latest research but I wouldn't be too focused on contraceptive pill as a direct cause. It's often trotted out and people often try and give it as an explanation but the last time I looked, the evidence for this as a significant risk factor was contested. Clotting after a virus and inactivity probably are more likely though I know that won't make you feel better. I know you will be beside yourself about not being with your DD but the risks of infection to medically vulnerable people can be significant so it might be in your daughter's interests that other patients don't bring in family members who could give her an increased risk of infection.

Good luck.

can't

She will need to be careful about birth control in the future - I was not allowed to take the pill and HRT is also out for me.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 05/08/2021 22:25

Glad to hear you got to talk to them and they were so kind I hope your dd is soon feeling a bit better and in less pain.

Babyroobs · 05/08/2021 22:35

Try not to worry, it sounds like she's getting all the correct help. Is she on contraceptives or anything that could have contributed to this ?

Disneyblue · 05/08/2021 23:01

I had a PE and DVT when I was 18. I'd been on the combined pill for three weeks. I was put on warfarin for 6 months and tested for blood disorders. Turns out I have protein C deficiency which basically means I have sticky blood so the pill didn't exactly help. I hope they do similar tests.

Hand hold for you though. It's scary xx

I can only have progestogen only contraception due to my clot history. There are plenty of options thankfully.
HollowTalk · 05/08/2021 23:13

That must be incredibly stressful for both of you. I hope everything goes well.

AgathaMystery · 06/08/2021 01:06

Sending lots of love to you and your girl. You must be so worried. I am so sorry you are both going through this xxx

WeatheringStorms22 · 06/08/2021 01:11

How is your daughter today?

cabrillolighthouse · 06/08/2021 13:30

Hi everyone, thanks again for your best wishes. She managed to get a bit of sleep last night and is feeling a little better today but bp still a little low she said. I will be able to go and visit tomorrow hopefully 🤞

Glad she’s doing a bit better, and sure you’ll be a little less worried once you’ve seen her and had a cuddle!

ThelmaDinkley · 06/08/2021 19:04

Brill news. Glad you’re going to be able to see her. All the best Flowers

Josiemac93 · 11/08/2021 21:39

Hi op! How is she feeling now? I hope shes recovering well!

storminasnowglobe · 11/08/2021 23:47

Thanks for asking @Josiemac93. She has been home a few days now and getting a teeny bit better every day. Even managed a very short walk outside today. Still very, very tired and quite breathless but the Dr said that is to be expected. DD got her A levels results yesterday and did so well and got into her first choice Uni. She's worrying that she won't be well enough to go but it's still a few weeks away so I'm keeping everything crossed 🤞

storminasnowglobe · 11/08/2021 23:48

Name change fail but oh well!

YerAWizardHarry · 11/08/2021 23:53

I had a pulmonary embolism almost exactly a month ago. I’m a wee bit older than your daughter (28) but was still obviously a massive shock! I collapsed at work, ended up in Intensive Care being thrombolised after being diagnosed with a massive bilateral PE. The first night was rough in that I was scared/uncomfortable etc but I wasn’t in any significant pain after being given oxygen.

I spent 5 days in the ward after the overnight in ICU. After the medicine to break up the clots I was given blood thinners through IV then blood thinners through an injection in my stomach and now taking oral blood thinners.

I went back to work this week and feel 100% back to normal, wouldn’t know my life is any different except the medicine. They too think it was caused by my contraception however they can’t be totally sure. I’ve to go for appointments at haematology outpatients to get genetic testing going forward.

Please know your daughter is in the best place she could be and they will definitely keep a very close eye on here. Hoping she’s on the road to recovery soon Flowers

olidora63 · 11/08/2021 23:53

I had a PE when I was 21 …I was on a heparin infusion and then took warfarin…I honestly cannot remember for how long . Hopefully your daughter can text or message you ..she will be fine 💕💐

YerAWizardHarry · 11/08/2021 23:54

Sorry just read she’s been discharged and is back home! That’s great news :)

cabrillolighthouse · 12/08/2021 00:06

@YerAWizardHarry thank you and so sorry to hear you have been through all of this too recently, best wishes for your continued recovery, it sounds like you are doing really well Thanks DD has a follow up with haematology too in 12 weeks. I'm assuming they will run some blood tests to see if there are any genetic clotting issues but I'm not sure. I think it will take a long time for the fear of it happening again to subside.
