If somebody from the 15th Century was stood in front of you, wearing jeans and a top, do you think you’d be able to tell they were from a different era?!

I’m bored! I know that people are said to have become taller as the centuries pass but I wondered if there would be any other discernible differences. Differences that would be obvious just by looking - the 15th C speech would most likely be a bit of a clue!

So if, for instance, 15th C person was stood in front of you at the bus stop, dressed in Boden/Primark/Next/Any High Street Shop would you realise something was a bit different?!

Gherkingreen
I often wonder this when I see old photos of really young men going off to war pre WW1, especially when the photos are colourised.

That's interesting that you should mention colourising photographs. They are doing that at Auschwitz because apparently they found visitors (online and in person) could relate more when they saw the images in colour.

OldTinHat · 05/08/2021 18:27

Oooh haven't there been photos of people 'from the past' in modern scenes? I need to google...I'll be back (if you will pardon the pun!).

One of the 'classics'.

OldTinHat · 05/08/2021 18:31

Of course totally missing OPs point but sort of not?!

Greensleeves presumably?
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/08/2021 19:38

Greensleeves is now disappointingly thought to have not been composed till the Elizabethan period.

@ufucoffee

Judging by the size of door frames in really ancient houses I'd think they'd be very small. Great question btw.
Misleading. Door frames were small to preserve heat.

Agree that the comments about teeth and hygiene are misplaced. Medieval people bathed a lot more frequently than early modern people, and didn't have access to much sugar.

It was only the very rich who had frequent access to sugar.

Shock Grin the mind boggles. Though having followed their social media, I suspect they know full well what they are doing with that description

Yy Terry. Their logo is also rather special.

I love this kind of nonsense. Any time travellery stuff is so interesting to me. The stories of Bold Street in Liverpool, and those young guys in the 1950s who swore they were transported back centuries as they walked through a village (Kersey I think it was called).
Cedilla · 05/08/2021 20:33

The fabulous Vasa Museum in Stockholm has some eerie facial reconstructions of the skeletons recovered from the site (Vasa really did sink on its maiden voyage, and when you see it you can understand why - it's completely unstable and a light breeze just toppled it over).

This chap specialises in making the facial reconstructions - from all sorts of places and eras.

Great thread OP.

On holiday few years back, found this book on the shelf. Wouldn't normally have read Crichton, didn't think it my thing but it was set in area of France we were staying in so thought I'd give it a go. It's about people suddenly appearing from the past, earlier though, medieval era and 20th century scientists going back. Lightweight but really good yarn if anyone needs a holiday read.

I think I love your post more than any. I have been wanting to rewatch that series for years and have never come across anywhere showing it.
FadoFado · 05/08/2021 21:21

Lost in Austen is so good. Definitely going to re-watch it.

oneglassandpuzzled · 05/08/2021 22:28

It’s really good! I love Wickham in jt.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/08/2021 22:49

Lost In Austen is so, so good. A lot of the P&P characters have become the definitive versions as far as I am concerned.

It was when formula was invented that small gaps between pregnancies became more common

Wasn't that why aristocratic women used wet nurses - so that they could get pregnant again more quickly?

felulageller · 06/08/2021 06:52

I think the wet nurses were more so the aristocratic women were sexually available to their husbands sooner.

borntobequiet · 06/08/2021 08:07

And to preserve their boobs.

Parrotanne · 06/08/2021 08:33

Thank you for all the fab links and book recommendations. I’ve done next to nothing this week other than delve into the past!

Their English would be different, if say age 40 they would be considered quite old

OhWhyNot · 06/08/2021 08:52

I think they would be a bit smelly with dirty hair and would have a worn look (unless very wealthy)

Its fascinating when they have dug up remains hundreds of years old they however they work it out make a model of them and they look like locals who’s family have lived in the area for years
