Lunch at nursery for DS and other things!

Need a little rant!
DS's nursery introduced hot meals for lunch back in February. They use a local catering company that specialises in healthy foods. We had an email sent to us which provided lots of detail about how much they promote healthy eating.
We are vegetarians, my DS has been vegetarian since birth, nursery know this and it's on all the forms etc.
In the email nursery sent us it says the company, "cater for all religious beliefs, allergies or intolerances and provide a weekly menu for us."
I've never seen a menu but nursery are usually pretty good at informing us to what DS has had, it's usually pasta or soup. DS is only there 2 days a week so I figured there was never much choice for vegetarians on the menu.
Last week, I had to pick DS up at lunchtime for an appointment. One of the nursery staff asked me if I wanted to take his meal home with us as it was already prepared. I was handed a ready meal from Asda. When I questioned it, the staff member said that this is what DS always has as he is the ony vegetarian. The also let him have the full portion as he's the only one who will eat that meal.
I don't mind ready meals and do give DS them on the odd occasion when things are busy but never the full portion as I'm worried about the salt content.
DH wants to leave it as he doesn't think it's a big deal but I checked out the website of the catering company, the vegetarian options look lovely and I'm disappointed the nursery aren't giving DS what they said they are.
I'm even more annoyed now as have just picked DS up and they threw away 2 of his cloth pants. We've just started potty training him and I know nursery is busy and hectic, I don't expect them to watch him like a hawk but to throw away stuff that can be washed?!
Thanks for listening!

@Anoisagusaris it was this one, Im assuming it's for an adult.

@redsky21 that's fair enough! It would better if DS could just go to the toilet when he needs to!

@youaresunshine At my nursery the printed menu card I was given only lists a meat option every day but the nursery told me my DD is given the veggie alternative. They made it sound like the catering company provides veggie alternatives every day as standard. I do think it’s silly that the menu doesn’t list a meat option and a veggie option each day as vegetarianism is really common nowadays and I’d like to know what she’s eating.

@youaresunshine the meal thing is not good at all though. I would ask to speak to management. No child should be having ready meals at nursery.

£6 a day and they are feeding him a shitty £2 ready meal????

@Odile13, I don't get that either! Nursey have always been slap dash about sharing info like this. Sometimes they write it on a board, tell us or never mention it.

@redsky21, thank you

@Anoisagusaris that really made me laugh! And just looking at it in black and white brings home how rediculous it really is.

The nursery staff are amazing and my DS loves it there but the owners really set me at edge sometimes. Like how they pleaded poverty so they put the fees up and then the next month they opened a new centre. Another time they asked all parents to pick up by 5 30pm even though we paid until 6. That one didn't stick, thankfully. I wouldn't be surprised if the ready meal thing was part of a cost cutting exercise and they were hoping I would never find out!

My concern would be the salt for a start!
Speak with the manager

That's 80% of his recommended salt content for the entire day! I'd be really cross.

This.

That's way too much salt for a 3 year old to be eating in one meal. Maximum daily amount should be 2g per day. If he's eating the whole meal, then as a PP has said that's 80% of his intake.

Eileen101 · 05/08/2021 06:02

That's an awful amount of salt for a 3 year old. I would think twice (at least) about eating that myself in all honesty, and I wouldn't even contemplate giving it to my own 3 year old.
I'd be sending in a packed lunch at the very least until they got their act together on veggie food. I'd also be wondering why nutritionally balanced and healthy food is provided for all the meat eating kids but not yours.

P.s op taking into account what a pp said about having soiled pants smelling in the hallway even when in nappy bags - can you send in a zip lock bag for any accident pants?
My DS is the same age and has recently been having accidents at nursery and I've been sending in a zipped wet bag (the kind I put youngest's cloth nappies in when put and about), but knowing how tight it is just coming off maternity leave, a zip lock bag would achieve the same. When I do this it means I don't have to wash all the spares and the bag to get rid of the smell...
