Following on from the How the Other Half Lives thread for discussion on the sometimes surprising or funny things we have learned about life and how others live it.

I didn't know where a lot of countries were until someone here posted a link to the Sporcle world quiz and I got somewhat addicted!

My boss once ordered a set of very expensive crockery for his new house to be delivered to work. I (assistant) assumed they were for “best”and said would you like me to email you some suggestions for an everyday set too? He was confused and said I don’t keep things for best, I just have the best every day.

This is the same guy who, after being cut up by a car which nipped into the parking space he was waiting for, waited till the driver got out and rammed it repeatedly until it was written off. Then gave his insurance details to the driver and said “don’t cut up rich people, they’re willing to pay for the privilege of upsetting you”.

I never knew you were supposed to put salt in a dishwasher.

I found out last weekend at my mums.

I am 30 and thought I was doing alright at adulting. Clearly not Blush

I don't know but this thread's title made me have to think hard about not knowing what I don't even know.

Occasionally you just have one of those moments where you learn something and the entire world just shifts a bit because you can’t believe you never knew before.

I had one of those moments when I learned about the existence of manatees 😂

Wow your boss sounds like a fairly hideous person.

I never knew the difference between old money and new money and the social implications of that aka old money = no money and class and new money = all the money and no class.
In my naive head I just thought old money or new money I wanted it. But that's what happens when you grow up in a fairly breadline state. I didn't realise the rich had a hierarchy too 🥴

Not sure if this counts but to check your journey/route BEFORE leaving and not just leaving and 'hoping for the best'. Delays, road closures, train cancellations etc etc... Downloading a couple of apps for this has made my commutes, journeys and all that so much more effective and efficient.

Everyday Racism.
It was actually some threads on MN that opened my eyes on it.

I was reading the previous thread but it had filled up before I could comment.

In response to the poster who said MC parents would never let their child grow up with a regional accent;

We have some friends who are both very solidly middle class. Both privately educated (one at boarding school) and both have RP southern accents having grown up and lived in leafy parts of London and the south. They moved away to another city and had their children. Their toddler started going to nursery only a few days a week (but still spends most of their time at home with them) and rather amusingly had picked up the local accent!
