Playsand Alternative

Hello, I am looking for an alternative to play sand to use in a large play pit, which doesn't create as much mess. I have been looking at rubber crumb but I don't know whether it is safe for children to dig in? I have also looked at pea gravel but not sure which one to buy. Kidfetti play pellets are very expensive for small amounts. Any advice/suggestions greatly appreciated!

Watching as sand is a pain in the arse.

Soil maybe? At least then it just joins the garden.

Pea gravel is a no here as she would eat it, stick it up nose etc.

I think anything sensory like that has the potential to be messy. At least sand is clean, not environmentally harmful and very engaging for the kids. Just keep it covered and rinse hands under the outside tap before they come in.

Unfortunately the people I'm building the play pit for really don't want sand. It is also for a large play pit inside not outdoors...

That kinetic sand?

I think any alternative will be messy too. I have used wooden pellet cat litter for messy play though, it turns to sawdust when spilled and trodden on.
I think this is why ball pools were invented, but they get everywhere too.

Not much point in having a sand pit and no sand..

There isn’t really much alternatives. Whatever you use is going to be messy

I visited a children's museum that used a rubber crumb material as a sand alternative and it was great. It was definitely easier to get out of shoes etc than sand. It was indoors though, I don't know how it would be outside.
