Has anyone ever hired one of these machines? Are they generally easy to use and do you have to pay a fortune for the cleaning products? I'm thinking of hiring one from The Range.

I just looked into hiring one to clean my sofas, but by the time I had everything I needed included it was just as cheap to pay someone to do it. The cleaning fluid is quite expensive. Obviously I can't comment on ease of use or hoe good it is as I didn't bother in the end.

We get one fairly regularly, very easy to use.
If I needed a large area or whole house doing I'd hire someone to do the lot, but we have used it for doing relatively small areas like a sitting room or bedroom.
Our local Tesco has one so we've hired one, cleaned a room and had it back in a couple of hours before which is convenient.

I did it when we moved in to our new house. I got a special that made it cheaper than paying someone to do it. It did a good job of cleaning however due to my inexperience I accidentally soaked the carpet through and it took forever to dry out.
I think next time I'd pay someone to do it for me!

They are easy enough to use but I found my carpets actually got dirtier after using them. I think it was because they were still slightly damp and I was walking on them which made them dirtier.
I have also had a professional cleaner in and thought that was a bit rubbish too so maybe it is just my carpets.

We hire them once a year. The unit is cheap to rent but the solution is spendy. A 20quid tub in our house does 4x rooms, 1x hallway and 1 x flight of stairs.

We then need another bottle for 2x rooms, 1x flight of stairs.

If we could get cheaper solution we would do it more. It's very effective.

I've mentioned it to my bargain loving husband now so will probably have to give it a go!

I've used them several times and they do make a big difference. Don't buy their branded cleaning fluids though, just use Persil Small and Mighty instead. That was a tip I picked up on here. It works a treat because it's biological and doesn't create lots of foam. If anyone tries to get you to buy the cleaning stuff just say you've got some at home.

It’s much easier to get someone in to clean your carpets (and you should get better results), but when we did it ourselves with Rug Doctor once (moving out of a rented property) it was fine. I’ve found professional cleaners can get all kinds of stains out of carpets - bike oil, etc - but Rug Doctor should work for a general clean? I think we used a small bottle of laundry detergent instead of the proper liquid following a recommendation on here...
