Book with advice for teen leaving for university

18 year old DS will be leaving for university in a month or two. Covid restrictions have been very stringent in the country in which we live. Schools and colleges have been online since March last year and he's barely met anyone outside immediate family or been able to leave the house much since then.

He's a sensible young man, but owing to all this is very inexperienced with independent life outside the house. He's good with laundry, doing the dishes, cooking competently, etc. We do discuss things and how to handle situations, but he's an enthusiastic reader and I'd really like to give him a book with things he should know.

I would love to have suggestions of books. Suggestions for things I should be telling him would also be welcome!

Go old-skool and get him a copy of Shirley Conran's 'Superwoman'

Thanks. I'll add that to my Amazon basket.

Any other books with tips for day to day life, advice about interacting with people, etc.?

I'd write your own witha few favourite family recipes in it too.

I see you mean more practical advice, but I’ll share this anyway - www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Dear-Coquette-Answering-Questions/dp/1785780956?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 It’s an agony aunt column for dealing with the uncertainty and diversity of life. Divided into different sections like family, love etc. A sensible young man will figure out the practical stuff easily enough.

Mob Kitchen is a recipe book aimed at students in a house share of 4 taking in turns to cook using accessible inexpensive ingredients.

Moneysaving expert is good for all aspects of managing money, but can't see how it translates into a book.

This one looks good on Amazon though.

Starting University - What to Expect, How to Prepare, Go and Enjoy

bendmeoverbackwards · 04/08/2021 09:39

Great thread. I’ve ordered the Starting University book.

owing to all this is very inexperienced with independent life outside the house.
Tell him that it is OK. It's part of the reason why people go to University - to figure all this out - even before Covid hit. Everyone is finding their way.
You don't go to University fully equipped with all the answers, in your study-subject or otherwise. Be open to experiences but remain true to yourself (don't get involved in freshers madness).

All excellent suggestions, thank you so much! Yes, I'm writing recipes in a book too.

He's a little apprehensive about moving away after the very isolated life he's led since last year so anything that would build up his confidence is helpful.

Dear Coquette started as a blog, and all available online still dearcoquette.com/

Which remind of The School of Life www.penguin.co.uk/books/312/312335/the-school-of-life/9780241985830.html They have lots of items now like card packs and “conversation starters” which might be nice to go through as a family - you’re still his best teacher! www.theschooloflife.com/shop/all-products/ They do conferences and talks online as well.

Honestly, if he can cook and do laundry he's probably well ahead of most of his fellow students!! I would look at finances and budgeting. Joining clubs / societies is a great way to meet like minded people and simple things like going for coffee with course mates between lectures can spark life long friendships. If they're on the same course they'll naturally have something to talk about!
