Patch or sew?

I've torn a 10cm hole in these linen trousers. Is there a patch I could use, or will I need to sew it together? Its in the crutch, so won't be viewed by anyone! Blush

Patch or sew?

They like very threadbare. Sewing will be a very temporary thing as they are highly likely to split again within the threadbare area. An internal patch is better and less likely to be seen. If you can’t master a near invisible stitch following the weave, then use an iron on interfacing.

@Bargebill19- thank you. They are only cheap, garden trousers. I'm reluctant to throw them out if I can get them to last the season. It also seems everywhere has sold out of 3/4, black, linen trousers!

Ah !!! In that case I would do whatever makes you happy. Sewing the gap up will probably get you through to sept/Oct.
or- as they are garden trousers, and if you want them to last a lot longer I would slap a colourful patch on them and smile every time they were worn!!!
I originally though they were ‘office’ wear.

@Bargebill19- I should have said in the OP that they aren't work wear. Just cool, comfy, great length and I can't find any others in the shops!

A bright patch in the crutch might have the neighbours talking if I'm bent over digging or planting though!!! Grin

So long as it’s not carrot shaped …..!

I'd sew in a big patch to cover all of the threadbare area to make them last longer.

You need a bit of this stuff, you'll find some in your local fabric shop. You can buy half a meter if you go to a shop...

Cut a patch slightly bigger than the threadbare bit of your trousers & pin it in place with the tear carefully pinned closed.

Iron over the patch till it's hot & fused & it will glue itself to the fabric & strengthen the threadbare area & split.

Neatly stitch around the edge of the patch & then sew the slit closed too.

That should keep them going a good wile longer 👍🏻

Interfacing irons onto the inside of your pants, for a fairly invisible mend

Echoing above - iron on a black patch to fit over the hole from behind (leave the hole slightly open or they’ll split again) and sew round it. Trim round hole to neaten. But once linen’s gone it won’t recover, so I’d look for some new trousers too.
