Sausage rolls. Your favourite brand or shop.

I like the Gregg's rolls, although they are a little greasy. Coopland's are quite good too. The best quality sausage rolls come from the local butcher's shops. I think the best overall value are the Co-op ones - £1.90 for a pack of six. Really tasty and not greasy. The Morrison's Deli sausage rolls and cheese and onion rolls are also not to be sniffed at, especially early evening when they're 30p for four!

All bad for one's waistline but good for the soul.

We have a Loaf bakery near us which is part of a chain.

Their hot vegan sausage rolls are so good that I prefer them to normal sausage rolls even though I eat meat!

Higgidy Pork and Chutney, and Higgidy Feta and Red Pepper.

I can't buy them often, they're like crack.

Greggs for the bakery, but Cornish pasty co have nice ones too. From the supermarket it has to be sainsburys...the best ones by far!

No grease, lovely crisp flake, lovely tasting 'sausage' filling but you never have to worry about getting a bit of gristle which, let's be honest, ruins the whole thing.

FurForksSake · 03/08/2021 22:17

Specific - Wimpole NT used to do really excellent ones made on site with their own produce.

Ashridge NT cafe do ones I like but DH doesn't (seem a bit fruity...)

Waddesdon NT ones are liked by all but not very artisanal for me.

Greggs or Morrisons hot ones are both big hits here.

I don’t eat sausage rolls very often (probably twice a year). If I ever fancy a sausage roll it is always Greg’s. I had one last week at the Services. That’ll do me until Sept, when I next stop at the services, on my way to hols 😋

Other than on a journey I don’t think about sausage rolls (or a costa coffee).

TheFlis12345 · 03/08/2021 22:20

M&S smoked bacon and Davidstow cheddar sausage rolls are absolutely incredible!

SerenShine · 03/08/2021 22:21

Oh my god, sausage rolls are a thing of beauty!

I stopped eating meat a while ago but the Greggs vegan ones are lush.

ImitationofBeing · 03/08/2021 22:23

I don't like big ones. I like the party sized frozen sausage rolls. And I like them cold with salad cream.

BluTangClan · 03/08/2021 22:24

Ginsters. I was surprised how much better they were than the supermarket own brand ones.
I've never got the fuss about Gregg's ones. I find they're greasy and salty with no real flavour

idontlikealdi · 03/08/2021 22:29

Greggs, hot.

We had 4.50 sausage rolls yesterday from an NT cafe and they were awful.

I hardly eat the things anymore as just looking at pastry seems to give me indigestion these days, so if I'm going to eat one I want it to be good and worth the calorie / fat expenditure!

Don't like supermarket ones at all.

WildRosie · 03/08/2021 22:29

The butcher just up the road from me does great sausage rolls and Cornish pasties - being in Yorkshire the latter may not be authentic but they're really good. Another local butcher does very similar pasties but calls them 'Yorkshire pasties' instead.

Pastry savouries are a fine invention.

I dream about coop lands ones. I moved and havnt had one for over 20 years

eightlivesdown · 03/08/2021 22:34

Greggs

Pootle40 · 03/08/2021 22:37

Greggs but for a real tasty less greasy version the best sausage rolls I've had were in Australia.

PolytheneRam · 03/08/2021 22:38

Do you have a sister? You could try nibbling her hand...

mnahmnah · 03/08/2021 22:38

Homemade. So easy with a roll of puff pastry and some sausage meat. Only 30 mins in the oven.

LemonRoses · 03/08/2021 22:38

I unfortunately tried a Greg’s sausage roll somewhere along the A35. Goodness it was disgusting. Pink mush that couldn’t be described as meat. Greasy pastry and no flavour at all.
How can people eat these things? A mouthful was more than sufficient. Their coffee was pretty grim too.

Homemade is the only way really.

BridgetInHerBravery · 03/08/2021 22:44

I'm allergic to wheat but the M&S 'made without wheat' sausage rolls are excellent, lovely buttery pastry and tasty sausagemeat.

sherrystrull · 03/08/2021 22:45

I like Greggs too. Supermarket ones are horrid and dry.

WildRosie · 03/08/2021 22:46

I admit I'm not crazy about either Gregg's or Coopland's coffee. The lids never fit on the cups properly.

I once made sausage rolls in a school cookery class but with shortcrust pastry rather than flaky. Not quite the same but ok.

I love sausage rolls! Thomas the Bakers in York sell delicious ones. Homemade are good, I like to make a giant one and slice, dc love a slice with beans.

WildRosie · 03/08/2021 22:50

Any supermarket sausage roll is improved by a few minutes in a hot oven as they're often in need of a little extra cooking (anaemic is the word that comes to my mind). Same with any pastry savoury.

Anyways, it's my bedtime. I'll look in again tomorrow for more sausage roll talk.

We have a fancy garden centre near us and the sausage rolls they sell in their farm shop/deli/place of delicious wonder are immense. Webbs.

Greggs ones are shit but wonderful, I could eat a couple of them at a time and not regret it at all!

lissie123 · 04/08/2021 08:03

Vegan sausage roll from Westonbirt Arboretum. I am not vegan but by god that roll is so bloody delicious I’m thinking about it!!
