Day out in Shrewsbury - what to do?

FreezerBird · 03/08/2021 12:00

I'm seeing someone onto a train in Shrewsbury next week and have the opportunity to hang around for a few hours before I go home. I haven't had a day to myself away from home since well before Covid so I'd like to make the most of it.

Any lovely places to eat? Things to do or see?

Also I seem to remember talk on a Sewing Bee thread a couple of years ago that there was talk of Shrewsbury having a fabulous haberdashery/fabric shop - where's that?

If you like sushi then definitely go to Umai on Princess Street. Really outstanding.

The indoor market hall is really interesting, some lovely independent stalls and eateries e.g. the Bird's Nest.

Walk by the river.

Watson & Thornton on Mardol is great for fabrics, it’s just past Lakeland and also Aberkhan which if you keep walking past the 2 shopping centres you will see on the left hand corner opposite the market. The Bear Steps is great for lunch in Alkmond Square (Church in the centre and a gallery next to it). Shrewsbury is a loop, with the river looping around it and there are lots of lovely independent shops. If the Station is on your left keep walking up the hill, past the Castle and this takes you on to the Main Street and you can wander up each of the little cobbles streets.

Fab, thanks both. I think the place previously discussed was Aberkhan so I'll have a peep in there!

If the prison is open, do a tour.

Go and wander into the Quarry (it’s what we call the park). It slopes down to the river and it’s gorgeous. Especially The Dingle. Over the footbridge there’s a lovely pub called The Boathouse and there no better thing to do on a sunny afternoon than sit on the terrace there with a drink and watch the rowers and the boats go up and down the river.

The Loopy Shrew is a lovely place to eat and if you like sweet things make sure to pop in to Planet Doughnut.

The Shrewsbury Museum in the square is free and definitely worth a visit.

The library is an incredibly beautiful building and I always liked to sit in the gardens with a coffee.

I am biased but there’s no better place than Shrewsbury.

Echoing above - if its sunny definitely walk from town to the Quarry to the Boathouse pub and have some food/drink there, its lovely.
Again highly recommend the Market Hall, dont be put off by the exterior! Birds Nest is excellent as is House of Yum if you like thai food, and dont miss out on the upper level - there's a really friendly wine shop & mini bar thats nice to sit at and have a few snacks too.
There's Crystals Cupcakes in the Parade shopping centre if you have a sweet tooth.
Wyle Cop has got loads of lovely independent shops for wandering about as well.

Boat trip?

Gingernaut · 03/08/2021 13:46

The castle is one of the first buildings you come across when you leave the station.

Thank you so much for your recommendations. I have had such a lovely day.

Had lunch at the Boathouse, enjoyed the Quarry and Dingle very much and generally wandered.

Particularly loved the indoor market where there is a very good second hand book stall on the upper level.
