Anyone know the Canary Wharf area?

Me, DH and two teens (16 & 18) will be in Canary Wharf tomorrow for lunch.
Just wondering what else there is to do in the area that might be of interest?
Is the Museum of London Docklands any good?
Happy to walk or jump in a taxi if need be.

Hi OP

I've worked in that area for 20 years...there have been a lot of changes!

The Museum is good but fairly compact. It's located in a row of converted warehouses. The Weatherspoons is next door to the Museum (to the left) inside the Ledger Building. It's surprisingly nice! There is a cinema in the next street.

There is almost always some kind of public art display going on - have a look HERE.

The are loads of shops in Jubilee Place. If you like walking, you can pick up the Thames Path and follow the route to Tower Bridge.

Westfield at Stratford is about 20 mins away on the DLR. Personally I get a strange vibe whenever I go there, I can never relax!

I hope you enjoy your daySmile

I think I would nip onto the DLR and go to Greenwich, you would be spoiled for choice for things to do there.

I lived right by Canary Wharf. Honestly not very interesting and most things are expensive in Canada Place Mall, barring Nando's and coffee shops. I suppose it's alright if you're just visiting once

I'd also recommend Greenwich, though the park is a bit of a walk from the stations if you're going from CW.

There are a lot of pop-ups in the parks at Canary Wharf at the minute - some tv screens etc. For Olympics and pop-up bars/restaurants.
You can also get the Uber boat from Canary Wharf which would be fun alternative transport when leaving

If you get the DLR to Cutty Sark station it's much closer to the (bottom end of) the park than Greenwich station proper is.

Get the river boat across to Greenwich. Lots to do there. And do walk through the foot tunnel and back again, under the river.

DestinationTravel · 03/08/2021 15:52

Museum of Docklands is pretty nice for young kids, but not for teenagers.

Lots of eating places - I think you will find every type of food in there. The Gun by the river is a short taxi ride away and very popular.
There should be outdoor events going on in Canary Wharf now. canarywharf.com/whats-on/

Thamesclippers boat ride to Greenwich and then do the market, Cutty Sark, observatory etc?

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 03/08/2021 16:05

Get on a boat down the Thames if you have time, either to Greenwich or central (eg the Tate but book). The museum is better for younger ones, the shopping is fine but a fairly average mall. There’s also Stratford nearby with the Olympic park to explore. Or if you are feeling lazy there’s a cinema nearby.
If you have a short time the roof garden at Canary Wharf is pleasant to walk through, generally a little walk looking at the docks is ok.

Museum of Docklands is fascinating!! And the slavery bit ties in perfectly with GCSE history. We spent a good 3 hours there!!!

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 03/08/2021 16:31

Tbf maybe I’ve just been to the museum so many times I no longer appreciate it… through fresher eyes it is interesting

Caramellatteplease · 03/08/2021 17:02

@TheViewFromTheCheapSeats

It was our first time 😁 I'd definitely do a second. Probably wouldn't do a third. If your on more than that I reckon you're already doing well.

Yeah, multiple those numbers by 10 then add some 😂
I’m very local and have also taught very locally…
