Has anyone turned their cellar into an office room/spare bedroom

Has anyone done this?
My cellar isn't damp, so I'm thinking it can't be THAT difficult surely? I am not knowing where to start, other than getting rid of all the junk that has been dumped down there....

Hope no mice down there

Have a look on Pinterest. I've done similar. You'll need a skip so you can clear it out right back to the wall and floor. If it doesn't have natural light you can get an electrician to put in spots on a dimmer and some uplighters. Get a plasterer to skim the wall and ceiling and decorate away.

Dh runs his second business from our cellar. We also have a full kitchen down there from when it was used as a family room. We already had a few windows there and a stone fireplace (Victorian property). It makes it seem less like a cellar. Some of the houses in our street also have a door access from the back garden.

I'd caution against spending too much on the project if there's a chance you might want to move any time soon.

Fine to paint the walls white, sort the lighting and put some rugs down for example, but don't do anything permanent that's expensive.

When we bought our first house, the previous owners had spent thousands adding a suspended floor with laminated flooring, plus cladded the walls with plasterboard and decorated, added wall lights etc.

It was a really nice room, but our mortgage company made us rip it all out because they said there was a risk of damp and retained £500 of the mortgage until we had done it. This was in 1995 and was a huge amount of money to us at the time, almost half the deposit we'd paid and we couldn't do without the money so had to comply. I assume these days they'd retain a bigger sum or else most people would probably lose that amount of money to keep the room.
