Coil removal and replaced does it hurt? 😑

Having my coil removed today and hopefully another replaced. Really worried about the pain 😔 can I take paracetamol before do you think? Not sure what to expect to be honest but very nervous about another being out in 😭

Everyone is different. My DD had hers replaced and she was in agony. A friend of mine hardly felt a thing. Definitely take a paracetamol beforehand. The nurse doing my DD's said everyone should be offered gas and air in her opinion.

take ibuprofen before you go. Mine bled itself out and I didn't realise so can't advise on how much removing it hurts!

No, mine was fine. I didn't take anything beforehand.

Mine have all hurt when going out/in. Significant pain but it’s only for a few mins so you know there is an end point if that makes sense.

GlamGiraffe · 02/08/2021 10:31

Taking it out is nothing at all. Its so quick and you cant actually feel it being taken out so its really nothing.
Putting a new one in is not really a big deal IME. Its a bit fiddly feelingn as in you can fel a slight movement in your abdomen when they insert the coil, and i had slight light cramps buti definitely wouldnt describe it as painful or terrible in anyway. I would take some paracetamol an hour before to be on the safe side if youre concerned but I've had three coils over the years and can honestly say it isnt terrifying or painful.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/08/2021 11:11

I have no experience of this but both Caitlin Moran and Naga Munchetty have publicly spoken quite reasonably about extreme pain during coil insertion and how women are not being given the pain relief they should have.

reasonably = recently, although what they said was also reasonable.

Sadgirlsummer · 02/08/2021 11:17

Literally had mine replaced an hour ago! 5 seconds max of a pinchy feeling during insertion. I actually find humming helps to distract myself from what's going on when I'm a bit nervous. The doctor even commented it was a great calming technique and she'd recommend that to patients in the future. Currently at home with a hot water bottle, tea, biscuits and working from the sofa. Deffo agree to take paracetamol beforehand and stay topped up for the day. Good luck! Xx

My first was practically painless on insertion and removal. My second (a couple months ago) was far more painful afterwards than I anticipated, though bad period cramp type pain rather than anything worse.

All in all the benefits outweigh the initial discomfort IMO, though it was something of a shock having had such an easy ride first time around.

Meltinthemiddle · 04/08/2021 17:02

It did hurt and was uncomfortable more then anything. Feel really down and sad though since having it not sure if it's connected.

It wasn't bad. I think it was less than the original install, but it might just be because I knew what pain it was going to be, and/or more experienced fitter.

I remember being surprised they were done, and thinking they'd only just taken it one out. So I don't think I felt it out, only in.

It was a sharp pinching pain, not unbearable but enough I needed to breathe through it. The main overarching feeling to me was 'wrongness' that something should not be poking there.

They did warn its possible they can't fit the new one same day if the cervix decides to spasm. But mine is generally well behaved when you find it.

Glad it’s all over and done with. Mine was horrifically painful Blush
