Should I feel bad?

Hi, so I started my job about 2 months ago and I’m thinking about handing in my notice. The job is a waking night support worker Friday to Sunday and although I get on really well with the service users and staff I’m wanting to leave. The job in its self is I just sit in a room and literally scroll through social media and watch Netflix while the service users sleep. I don’t have to do anything else and it’s quite literally frying my brain. I’ve got a job interview on the 11th of this month as it’s something that is going to be more of a challenge for me which is what I want. Should I feel bad for A) looking for a different job? B) handing in my notice as I’ve not worked here for very long?

Why would you feel bad? If the job isn't for you, it isn't for you.

Lbw1997 · 02/08/2021 03:43

@Sparklfairy mainly because they’re all so lovely and I feel like I’d be letting them down.

It sounds hellish tbh. Yes you're basically getting paid to watch netflix but the time must really drag! On some level you need to occupy yourself otherwise you will slowly go mad Grin Go to the interview.

Would it be more tolerable if you watched something different or read?

There's endless things of interest on the internet, so why restrict yourself to social media and Netflix?

Look on YouTube, read books, research things you are interested in, travel the world via Google maps, the internet is your oyster, as it were.

consider taking courses. i wrote some great papers on night shifts that were quiet.

I’ll take the job 😄....I’d love it

I think the problem is more so the fact I feel I have to be active. Don’t get me wrong I’m getting paid to do what I do at home which I can’t complain about but I just need to be on the move and do something productive. @BarbaraofSeville I’m not much of a reader I’ve never really been able to sink into a good book if that makes sense.

Are you allowed to exercise if you can do it quietly? Do a few stretches, squats, planks, push ups etc?

Lbw1997 · 02/08/2021 09:58

@BarbaraofSeville the room I have to sit in is next to the a service users room and they’re a very light sleeper and because it’s an old building the floor boards are very squeaky. @fallfallfall I’ve recently enrolled back into college to finish doing my GCSEs as I do want to go to uni to study midwifery (I didn’t do to well in school)

Could you do a midwifery access course? You could even do an OU degree (they have easier courses too if you've been out of education for a while).

If not though, there's no reason you should feel bad. I'm sure they'd get rid of you in a heartbeat if it was somehow convenient for them. Just explain you're bored and need more of an active job. Nothing wrong with that.

Lbw1997 · 02/08/2021 12:26

@hartwood my boss actually called me about half an hour ago asking if I could go into tomorrow for a chat. I’m not sure what about though unless she’s got wind ive been applying for other jobs, I don’t know how though as I’ve not told anyone at work yet. I am planning on doing an access course but I still need my GCSEs to get onto the course. I’ll get there eventually
