iPhone 7 iOS 14.4 keeps shutting down as soon as I unplug from charger. Anyone else had similar? Know how to fix?

Recent issue. Phone not quite 2 years old.

This is most annoying.

It will be at 100% on charge then as soon as I unplug it, it crashes as though completely out of charge.

When it comes back on within seconds of being plugged in it starts off at 10% then literally within a min or two is at 50-70%

Upgrade due soon so don't think I cba sorting a repair

But if I can fix it myself that'd be great

I'm basically having to have it plugged in all the time

My son's phone is doing this too. Thought it was a fault on his phone and was going to take it to the Genius Bar but now I'm not so sure.

Apple forcing you via software update to upgrade? Wouldn't put it past them.

MercyBooth · 01/08/2021 20:10

Fine ta @Graphista How are you doing?

Graphista · 01/08/2021 22:30

@mumoftinyterrors so I'm not going nuts then! I can't find anything online couldn't get through to Apple, plus whenever you do their solution is always basically "have you turned it off and on again" and "is the iOS up to date"

@MercyBooth actually things pretty rubbish here at the moment - this is not helping!

I have a iPhone SE, version one, and it was showing the same fault; indicating very low charge, then fully charged, etc when restarted. Part of the problem probably is that it is getting old, but I am in Australia and we are in the middle of a cold winter where I live. I found keeping the phone warm, for example putting it in a pocket of my slacks, has almost completely gotten rid of the problem – touch wood as I write that.

I'm having an opposite issue - phone getting really hot at times. Slows it down and I have to turn it off until it cools down

My DDs iPhone 7 kept doing that too actually it was driving her nuts but as it was already cracked I just got her another phone

Either battery is worn out or the phone is knackered. Are you using a genuine charger & lead?

DobbleDobble · 02/08/2021 05:44

Hi
I recently had this with my I phone 8 and it was a storage issue, literally the storage was full……… but not by my doing .
It had to be sent off to Apple to fix after calling them 3 days running and trying different re sets , back ups etc.
Check this:
Go to general
Go to I phone storage
Scroll to very bottom and check “ other” storage, if it’s more than 5gb it’s the issue.
Also “ system” will be using 5gb or less.

If they are both over that and you can see it’s not any of your apps/photos/documents then you will need to call Apple free and go through it with them.

It seems one of the latest updates caused it but they won’t admit it.

DobbleDobble · 02/08/2021 05:46

Oh sorry , meant to add also check battery
Go to
Battery
Peak performance /advanced see what it says about your battery, anything less than 80% it needs a new battery.

Graphista · 02/08/2021 10:41

Genuine charger etc yes

Storage more than 5gb yes but bloody hell it should cope with that!

Battery - "your battery's health is significantly degraded"

There's a link that takes me to a new battery with Apple page

Honestly these are not cheap phones, stuff like this shouldn't happen! And while Apple will sort it if you contact them it's a faff and shouldn't be necessary!

I'm less than 2 months to upgrade so I can't be bothered doing all that!

I love iPhones in terms of ease of use and the apps available but it is infuriating that they seem to continually have problems like this

And I know android phones aren't necessarily better, there's androids that blew up, that fell apart, that don't connect properly and also battery drainage issues there too

So it is hard to know which phones are more reliable, especially when they're new out or it's the operating systems and not the actual phones at fault

Did you buy the phone new or refurbished? I ask because they stopped making the iPhone 7 two years ago. If you’re very close to an upgrade, you have little to lose by DIY battery replacement. An iPhone 7 battery is £15 or less and there are videos showing you how to replace it yourself in 5 minutes (or so they claim).

All the people complaining about battery drop with 14.4 are (I understood) seeing “100%” for battery health, which is why it’s a mystery. If your battery health is “significantly degraded,” then I would hate to see you waste your time with all these things people are going through to try to “fix” the 14.4 ”mystery” when nothing is going to fix it for you except a new battery.

Also, you can try upgrading to 14.7 first. One article said 50% of people said it fixed the battery drain and overheating issues for them (of course, 30% said there was no difference so…)
