hostile architecture - preventing crime to maintain orders and preventing public places from being used in activity that they are not intended for (homeless sleeping)

  1. Do you agree with hostile architecture?
  2. Now knowing what it is do you see it on a regular basis?
  3. Do you think hostile architecture should be mentioned more to raise awareness?
  4. How would you raise awareness? Thank you if you take the time to read and answer this! :)

Why ask? Are you a journalist looking for an east story?

VladmirsPoutine · 01/08/2021 15:31
  1. No
  2. Not regularly where I live but I have seen it - mainly around main train stations and attraction spots.
  3. Yes
  4. Social media platforms would be a good place to raise awareness

I had to Google it Blush

  1. No
  2. Yes, typically when I'm wondering why something is so uncomfortable for just about everyone eg curved seat benches, bus shelters with bars rather than seats
  3. Rather than spend money on design and implementation of equipment that deters the few but is ugly and uncomfortable for everyone I would rather channel the funds into assistance for the homeless
  4. Use a documentary platform such as Panorama, raise petition and lobby local council. Encourage objection at council planning meetings. Social media is too easy to ignore, physical presence much harder.

Ok. Sorry. The questions sounded like a journalist fishing.

  1. Depends what/ where it is. Addressing the root causes of homelessness should be more important than making comfier park benches.
  2. I don’t tend to notice in real life but am on a hostile architecture Facebook group and they show many worldwide examples. 3 & 4) it’s complicated. City centres are suffering due to the changes in shopping patterns/ internet etc and made worse by lockdowns. Turning them into open area sleeping for homeless doesn’t seem to be the preferred option as it will cause further deterioration as many people will avoid. There are no easy answers for a horribly complicated problem.
