Cost of building a home office in our garden.

As it now looks like I will be working from home permanently we really need to think about how this will work long term.
I'm currently working at the dining room table but i need something more permanent so I don't have to pack everything away if we need the whole table for eating.
We don't have a spare room, or space in any other room for a desk.
It's not an ideal time to move as dc's are of the age they could well be moving out within the next couple of years. So it would be pointless buying a bigger place when we won't need so much space then.
So I've been thinking about getting an office/summer house to go in the garden.
Has anyone done this successfully? Roughly how much can I expect it to cost and does it work okay working all day in one?

We had this built in our back garden as an office and spare room. It's perfect. We got the diamond package so it has electricity, heating and air conditioning.
We paid £8000 ish.

Here's ours. It's used every day.

Has anyone ever seen one with a loo/bathroom in? Is that even possible?

HappyDaysToCome · 31/07/2021 19:50

Ours cost about £12,000 all in I think. It’s brilliant - fine in the winter (with an electric heater) and in the summer too. It looks attractive in the garden too.

DPotter · 31/07/2021 19:54

I had one built 11 yrs ago - with planning permission and everything cost £14k. 12x 14.

Mine was meant to have a loo, but as it's only 18 steps from back door, I made the smaller room into a store room

Put in last week over a day and a half, it is amazing.
Left side is hubby's work space and right hand side is now dining room (and my marking space when I abandon everyone in the evening).
We used Booths garden offices and they are really good, plus eco friendly - some of the packaging is used as the roof stuff...sorry was teaching when it was installed so just trying to remember what husband told me.
We are lucky to have office space in the house but I need my house back during the holidays, now I can banish husband GrinGrin

@balloonsintrees and @MWNA, were yours built on site, or off-site and craned in?

MWNA · 31/07/2021 20:25

Built on site.

BlueSurfer · 31/07/2021 20:26

We’ve been looking into this and heard really positive things from everyone who has one. It just feels like a way of making our home stop feeling as if it’s an office as well.

WhatIsThisPlease · 31/07/2021 20:42

My boss has had one built. It cost her 12k.

Snozzlemaid · 31/07/2021 21:42

Good to hear positive stories.
Guess we had better get saving.

I converted my garden shed. The shed was already there, and I'd guess a new one like it would cost about £1500. To insulate, refelt, clad and get electrics done was in the region of £2000. I also had a proper upvc door and window fitted.

It's absolutely amazing. 3m x 2.5m and suits my working in it perfectly.

Built on site, had to come through the house as well as we have no side access.

We’re having a studio built so we have somewhere more away from the main house and private for the next stage in the children’s lives - to allow for partners privacy, crying babies etc. It will be registered as a home office with occasional overnight for planning purposes. It’s coming in at around £87,000 but has a bathroom and kitchenette.

Our shepherds hut (my husband’s office) was about £14,000 including transport a decade ago.

We had ours installed in May, so pleased with it. DH works from home, we recently downsized so he needed a small office. Ours is 4mtrs x 3mtrs. Double skinned, Insulated, power, light & data cabled. Special glass to stop heat in summer & keep heat in, in the winter. Also houses the treadmill & chest freezer. Cost £15k, including the concrete base.

Those of you that have done this have you had cable laid for internet connection or have you managed to get WiFi to reach?

OP posts:
BaklavaBalaclava · 03/08/2021 19:18

I use the power line adapter, which gives me perfect connection (incl. zoom) and cost £40.

It goes through the power cable apparently!

LemonRoses · 03/08/2021 19:56

We have a booster from one of our routers in a nearly shed that serves the shepherds hut and will serve the studio.
Shepherds hut has mains electricity connection. Studio will have electricity, water and drainage.

This is much more my price range so glad to hear it can be done a lot cheaper than many have paid. We're looking at summer houses which you can get for roughly £1000 which dp can build. Not sure yet about what base and whether he can do that. Then the extras would be electrics, WiFi, insulation, flooring at the least. Getting quite excited about having a new room to decorate and kit out.
