If you have a cleaner, do you pay them when they go on holiday?

I assumed yes. Especially given that we have had them for 9 months and this is the first time they have taken a holiday!
Then I realised my childminder doesn't charge me when she is on holiday.

I'm still going to pay them.

I just wondered what others did?

Yes, we get paid holidays so why shouldn't our cleaner; same for sick leave.

If you are going to treat her as an employee with rights to paid annual leave, are you operating a payroll and making pension contributions too?

There are legal consequences to acting in a way which creates an employment relationship instead of self-employment.

Is your cleaner an employee?

I’m self employed (not a cleaner) and that’s not how it works. I only expect to get paid for stuff I actually do, plus stuff cancelled at very short notice.

It would be entirely different if cleaner was employed, either by a family or a company

Wjevtvha · 31/07/2021 11:42

No, that’s part of being self employed surely? I don’t pay my window cleaner when he doesn’t come

MeredithMae · 31/07/2021 17:18

Yes we definitely do, they do a fantastic job for us and we couldn't be without them now (they're a married couple). We paid them all through lockdown too.

Topofthepopicles · 31/07/2021 17:20

No they are self employed not my employee.

BackforGood · 31/07/2021 17:32

No, my cleaner was very clear I don't pay her if she isn't available.

She said it means she has no guilt when she goes on holiday.

However, my thinking is it is the difference between being self employed and an employee.
Employees have paid holiday, self employed people factor it into their hourly rate, the fact that X days a year they won't be earning.

Duvetdweller · 31/07/2021 17:35

Mine comes in and does a deep clean when we’re away - she just tells me how many hours it took and I trust her to tell the truth

Delphigirl · 31/07/2021 17:37

Yes she is page, 4 weeks paid holiday plus bank holidays, pension etc

Delphigirl · 31/07/2021 17:38

Paye not page

ZenNudist · 31/07/2021 17:41

No as she is self employed. I did pay her recently when I was on holiday for 2 weeks but left a long list of jobs to do.

As a cleaner I have worked for very wealthy clients who travel very frequently. I charge £13 p/h and they ask me every year not to put my prices up as they can't afford it. The houses are million pounds houses. Most are millionaires and one is a billionaire. I know this because I polish the plaque from the sale of their gold investment shares. They want the best for the least and never cover me when they are on holiday. I haven't even been able to go in holiday for the past 3 years with my children as I cannot afford it. I do laundry, cooking, parcel collecting, even fixing things. One client even told me that she and her husband have decided that they want me to look after them when they are old which is not what I hope to be doing in the future. They go away sometimes for 3 months and at a time and I'm left working any hours I can even the weekend. I wish I had clients who were not like this as they seem to think it's okay for me to live basic but would not be able to do this themselves. It's nice to see that not everyone operates the same 😞
