How much would you expect to pay for (wo)man and van service?

I've just been quoted £75 for picking up a sofa, driving it about 1 1/2 miles and dropping it off.

Is that the standard rate, it just seems a lot steeper than I was expecting :(

I have been trying to arrange similar this week although it was taking it around 20miles.

I contacted a few people and quotes ranged from £30 to £95 there seemed to be absolutely no rhyme not reason for pricing.

I'd shop around if I were you. Good luck!

Far too much. The guy I used recently charged £20 an hour and had a Ford transit (I think they’re called) so big enough for a sofa. He was great and helped with lifting everything. Try Gum Tree or the Next Door app if people use it in your area.

If it’ll take two people to move it then it’ll be more expensive.

I'm arranging this now and it's pretty consistent around here = £80 per hour, which always means 2 people (I guess health and safety means two are needed for most jobs). Most of them will only take min 2 hour bookings, too!! I'm slightly worried that they will work slowly and try to make it take more than 2 hours, and am wondering if I can tell them to just do the heaviest things first and then leave it when it gets to two hours....!!
Time to drive to the place and unload also counts in the time of course, and that isn't as predictable.

Put your details into www. comparethemanandvan.co.uk you'll receive a lot of quotes at the same time. It's a brilliant website !

It depends on the area and what needs moving, really. Most of these services require two people as items are heavy and they can't ask customers to help in case they injure themselves (insurance purposes).

FloofyCushion · 31/07/2021 09:29

Companies with proper licence and insurance can easily cost £80 per hour. If they damage your item they can claim the cost back from their insurance. A random off facebook will be £20 to £30 but if they damage your stuff you have little to no recourse. I use the randoms for cheap furniture and the proper companies for expensive items and waste disposal. Never use an unlicensed waste disposal company because they will fly tip!

I am a national same day courier running my own business and what Floofycushion says is right. I pay out a huge amount for insurance including hire and reward, goods in transit and public liability and I obviously have to price jobs to cover costs. A local person/man with a van who doesn't have the overheads is what you need but as already said your goods will not be insured.

Thanks everyone - its quite an eye opener

Its a second hand £75 sofa so willing to take the risk of it not being insured I think! I shall try to find a local person.
