We is revolut, initially it was for holidays to be able to pay in any currency and it was really easy. We needed euros and dollars but weren't sure how much so it made it simple. It's also been used to buy online in different currencies like sending cards from moonpig in Australia so was easy to just convert the right amount of dollars to make the payment.

After that when not on holiday we now use it for our food shopping and keep that pot of money separate just for food. But I'm quite anal with money and like accounts to be sorted and separate, and my dh doesn't care how it's all sorted as long as he doesn't need to do it.

We also have the junior card for our son who is 9 which is great and he has his own app to see his pocket money.

We only have the basic card and don't pay a fee which is fine for us as we don't tend to take cash out, we use it as chip/pin. If your son wanted to be withdrawing cash then paying for one of the upgrades might be worth it and still would likely be cheaper than converting currencies although I'm no expert.

@WhereIsMyGlasses thanks for the info, sorry to sound vague have so much I need to get organised in just a few days so ...

I want to send monthly money for his as an allowance whilst he's there for recreation, any clothes he needs to buy etc. I dont want to be putting huge amounts on as he'll just spend the lot to begin with once the novalty wears off Im sure.

We are in the UK he is going to USA
We both order our own cards off the App - think you have to open them with a certain amount of money on so makes sense to add dollars????

Anything else I need to know?

I use one for travelling.

I really rate it but make sure it’s not only source of funds. They do have issues sometimes with topping up and making payments. On a couple of occasions over the past 24mths their entire system has gone down.

He's got a Visa Debit Halifax account for a 16 year old - Halifax told me no charges for me to transfer money to it. Not sure if he will be charged for using it in the USA.

From what I can gather everyone uses card etc Apple Pay etc - my Son said I could even transfer money to his paypal and he can take from that etc,

You top up via the app. Download it to your phone and link your debit card to it.

When you want to top up you go the "add money" make sure Sterling is selected. The amount you type in is immediately debited from your card.

You then go to "exchange" on the app and exchange from Sterling to dollars. It tells you the rate at this point.

MadeForThis · 01/08/2021 13:25

He is the only one who needs a card as he will use it to spend.

I do think so, if I remember I only had to open mine with £10. Dh has recently opened his own (he uses that to limit his take away coffee habit lol) and he will often send money to mine and ask me to transfer to the junior account. The junior account seems to only be attached to one adult account.

From your situation,I think if you and your son both have adult accounts, the basic cards are £5 ish to order then once set up and each of you have the app you can just transfer as and when, or set up a regular amount. The other good thing about the app is that if he loses his card he can freeze it straightaway too.

With we could edit with the amount of typos I make. I meant I don't think so...!

WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself · 01/08/2021 14:46

I’ve had one for a couple of years. It’s brilliant.

PegasusReturns · 01/08/2021 15:51

Oh and secondly get it ASAP and start doing multiple transactions:

Put money on.
Transfer money out to bank account both in his name and others.
Pay for goods online and in shops.
