Playing music in the garden - annoying or not?

What is the rule on this? Dh says it’s allowed as long as it’s not between 11pm and 7am. I think it can still be reported to the council though can’t it?
And even if it’s allowed, people would still find it annoying wouldn’t they? I’d feel self conscious playing music loud knowing that I’m forcing others to hear it.
Bit of a twist to the story - it’s my dh that’s playing this music. It makes me feel on edge and embarrassed.

Gosh, I'm amazed so many people are so easily annoyed. I don't mind my neighbours playing music quietly in the garden. As I do. Not late at night but generally, it's fine.

DrNo007 · 30/07/2021 22:42

Personally I hate it. Legally speaking it is a misconception that noise nuisance law can only apply between 11pm and 7am. Some council enviro health departments believe this but it’s not the case. There is public nuisance law that says noise nuisance can be at any time of day or night. I am not a lawyer but have suffered from noisy neighbours in the past and had legal advice which worked in getting the noisy f—-kers evicted.

DrNo007 · 30/07/2021 22:43

I would add that anyone who wants to listen to music in the garden should do so on headphones.

DrNo007 · 30/07/2021 22:46

Here is some advice that is accurate about the law on noise nuisance: www.gov.uk/guidance/noise-nuisances-how-councils-deal-with-complaints

campingfever · 30/07/2021 22:49

very, very annoying

EverythingDelegated · 30/07/2021 22:53

I hate it too, find it rude and antisocial, same on beaches, campsites etc. Fortunately all our neighbours are considerate and don't do it.

MrsBertBibby · 30/07/2021 22:55

I quite like hearing next door's radio while he's pottering about in the garden. His grandkids are much more annoying, they are quite screamy.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 30/07/2021 22:58

God l always have the radio on in the garden, it's never blaring out but loud enough so l can hear it but when my neighbours have their tunes on, l don't bat an eyelid....Nice to hear people enjoying their gardens on the rare sunny days we get

RevolutionRadio · 30/07/2021 23:05

We play music in the garden to distract our ears from the screaming next door.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 30/07/2021 23:06

@RevolutionRadio sounds awful

NinaGonk · 30/07/2021 23:10

I hate it.

Its impossible for me to just sit and peacefully read in my garden. Our neighbour is always playing music. So selfish.

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/07/2021 23:19

I think it is usually antisocial .

mancarose · 30/07/2021 23:21

Very inconsiderate, whenever I want to play music I make sure the doors and windows are shut, we had a next door neighbour who plays music too loud during the day and if it causes you consistent nuisance no matter what time you can get a noise complaint, I know this because we made one against her and she had to move as this wasn't her first and she rented

Because people are selfish dicks Wink

AtrociousCircumstance · 31/07/2021 00:12

I don’t know your DH OP, but I hate him. Just for the music.

AlwaysLatte · 31/07/2021 00:12

It's not on if it can be heard by anyone but you.

HerrenaHarridan · 31/07/2021 00:21

There are a lot of nippy people on here who think neighbours should be not seen and not heard.

Living close means hearing other peoples noise sometimes.
If that’s how you live that’s how it’s going to be

Personally even if I think my neighbours music is shit Im glad they are having a nice time.
I would rather hear them laughing and singing shit songs and being merrily raucous than be listening to arguing because they are bloody miserable sneaking around all the time trying to make sure the neighbours don’t hear them existing in their house or own bloody garden.

The 11-7 noise rule (standard council by-law) is the compromise.
Day time noise is acceptable and the grumpers just have to suck that up

Enjoy you music and don’t let the miserable kill joys spoil it for you with their seething resentment of your fun

echt · 31/07/2021 05:47

Actually, it isn't. Day time noise can still be a nuisance. Any noise can.

Really? You know of people who are bloody miserable and have huge arguments because they are not allowed to make noise?

BananaMilkshakeWithCream · 31/07/2021 06:49

Personally we don’t play it at all. However, our neighbours on both sides do and it’s so bloody loud and so crap as well 😞 They seem to have no idea what they’re subjecting everyone else to at all hours of the day and night. It’s part of the reason why we’re moving to a detached house later in the year. No attached garden, 😁

Sittinginthesand · 31/07/2021 07:09

I think it’s awful, so arrogant and selfish. I also hate people playing music on beaches.

Motherofalittledragon · 31/07/2021 07:17

Annoying and antisocial anytime of the day or night, my neighbours play music outside during summer all the bloody time, no wonder I love winter!

Arrowheart · 31/07/2021 07:20

Very selfish.

Obviouspretzel · 31/07/2021 07:22

Always a massive issue on here but fairly normal to me. Not blasting, but audible. When I think about the houses that surround me, at least 3 are in the habit of music in the garden in hot weather. Doesnt bother me if it isn't too loud. Its usually shit music sadly.
