What's good about January?

Was just thinking about how I love every time of year for different reasons. Like all the outdoor activities and sunshine in summer, autumn walks, Christmas, spring when the blossom starts and bulbs poke through. But that bit of winter after Christmas - I can't find anything to like about it. What do you enjoy about that bit between New Year and the start of Spring?

Nothing though next year I’ll have Stranger things to look forward, the night start very slowly to get lighter.

ilovesooty · 30/07/2021 23:50

Nothing.

In fact November, December, January and February are all utterly foul.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 30/07/2021 23:54

DS'S birthday.
That lovely clean-house-after-Christmas feeling.
Long afternoons with a jigsaw and the woodburner going.
Call The Midwife (usually, slightly scuppered by the sodding Plague).
Christmas chocolate to be eaten Because It's There.
Wintry walks.
Hot chocolate.
Recharging batteries in general.
Slow down and enjoy it, I say.

Bloody Christmas is over for another year. Hooray!

Well, it’s over for another six months, anyway, until the supermarkets start stocking Christmas tat again and halfwits start buying it in July.

PolkadotSkies · 30/07/2021 23:57

So jealous of animals that hibernate through it all. Their lives are endless summer!

PolkadotSkies · 30/07/2021 23:58

If this is correct, whhhhhyyyy did we not continue this? 😂

My daughters birthday is in January so that’s fun. I also love those days in January that are bitterly cold but dry and sunny. They are some my favourites

That would be totally fine. That's how January is in many countries. In the UK is it mainly windy and hideous rain. If it was mostly cold, clear, blue-skyed, wind-free days, it would get much less hate! The issue isn't the temperature. It's the wind and rain that makes it unbearable to be outside, and the constantly overcast sky which makes everything look grey and it's just so depressing, and oppressive.

I used to enjoy being extra sociable in January and catch up with all the people I hadn't met up with in the run up to Christmas!

Treezan82 · 31/07/2021 08:42

@IHateFlies

The best thing about January is that it’s usually a quiet and boring month so it’s a good time to focus on yourself. Embrace the dullness that is January to soothe and rebalance yourself. Eat healthy warming meals. Read relaxing and soothing books. Watch some cosy films you’ve been meaning to see. Exercise. Contact people. Put food out for the birds. Take a multi vit. Go to bed early. Plan things to do the coming year.

Just remembered there is a chance the new series of Peaky Blinders should be released in January 22. So there is that

I don't like the bit between new year and twelfth night, when some people have taken their decorations down but some people still have them up. Is Christmas over or not? I also love the new diary feeling and usually take up a new hobby to occupy myself through the dreariness. This year I picked up two new languages and still doing well with them!

DinosaurDiana · 31/07/2021 09:17

New year, new start. I love it !
When the Xmas tree goes I have a big clear out and clean up, getting ready for the new year ahead.

Indigopearl · 31/07/2021 09:19

The only positive I can think of is that you don't have to pay any council tax.

Disneycharacter · 31/07/2021 09:37

Nothing. It's cold and miserable

MiamiPants · 31/07/2021 09:44

We're members of our local wildlife refuge.

January mornings are our favourite time to visit.

Barely anyone is there. The plants are often white and frosty.

On the really heavenly days the otters' water is partially frozen over and they have a whale of a time "skating" all over it. And we're the only people there to see it.

Also the cups of tea/coffee and cake we have to warm up after seem extra incredible on those mornings too!

MiamiPants · 31/07/2021 09:45

January is often "museums month" for us too. As we find the big London ones are pretty quiet this first few weekends of the year.

Plus free (important after Christmas!) and gets us out the house.

marmaladehound · 31/07/2021 09:46

I hate January. I find it so depressing, cold short days. But I need to find something more positive as it's my son's birthday in January!

Mintjulia · 31/07/2021 09:47

Taking down dusty Xmas decorations
Planning the new year
A good cold snap, with a chance to wear lovely thick sweaters and bright colours. No grey and gloomy. Smile
Walking in crisp frosty countryside (see clothes, above)
Decent boots.
Winter food, spicy casseroles and fruit pies
Cleaning out the greenhouse ready for spring.

Fairyliz · 31/07/2021 13:48

@Titsywoo

It's quiet and I can stay home and do a lot less than normal. I get a bit over-socialised after the Xmas and New Year period and Jan is the least social month of the year.
The thing is most people think like this which is fine for them but it’s my birthday and rubbish for me. No one wants to go out because it is too cold/ roads are bad/ they are spent out over Christmas/ feeling ill with colds flu etc. Makes me feel sad, don’t forget your friends with January birthdays.
SalsaLove · 31/07/2021 13:51

DH and I have our birthdays and make a week of it in Paris. Last time was in 2020.
