Naproxen side effects

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience about side effects from taking naproxen?

Dp is getting over a nasty virus, very like covid but negative tests say not that virus. But has a really bad cough. From coughing, hes pulled a muscle in his back and really struggling with the pain. It gets slightly better, then he coughs again and is back to square one.

Phoned the doctors today and got a prescription for naproxen for the pain. Now its in his medical history that he shouldnt have ibuprofen etc due to gastro issues, but doctor said it should be fine short term. So he had some this morning about 11am after picking up prescription, it helped with the pain so all good.

But now its wearing off, he is feeling really funny. Cant really describe whats actually wrong other than the fact that he doesnt feel right at all.

Could this be a side effect to the naproxen wearing off, or possibly linked with the gastro issues?

For full disclosure, we also had pizza for lunch which left me feeling very sluggish and full of stodge so maybe its just a more extreme version of that rather than anything to do with the medication at all?

Doesnt help that dp is very wary about taking the type of medication he had always avoided, so hes said himself it might be more in his head than anything else.

I find it hard on my stomach I always take it with omeprazole. Can't your dh take something like codeine? That can give you constipation but it doesn't affect your stomach in the same way.

naproxen is very potent stuff.
very effective.

have a read of the package leaflet.

it can cause cardiovascular issues (faster heart beat) which can make you feel 'funny', dizzy, nauseous, clammy.
if gastric issues are known it's usual precribed together with omeorazole to protect the stomach.

I hope he feels better soon!

It’s usually ok to take it short term, but in the longer term it does affect your stomach acid and would normally need to be accompanied by a PPI like omeprazole. It would be unusual to have a reaction so quickly; if he took it at 11 though was it with a full stomach (it is supposed to be)?

Never had side effects with naproxen, but always take omeprazole at the same time to prevent gastric problems.
It always takes 24 hours plus to make any difference which is what my gp expected. I doubt the feeling funny is due to the naproxen- not a Dr ovb.

They gave me stomach ulcers. You must must take omeprazole with them

Suzi888 · 30/07/2021 19:53

I took some once, had them off a friend. Very bad tummySad up all night - never again!

Strongswans · 30/07/2021 19:53

Naproxen is strong but effective, I have a chronic stomach issue as well as other problems and am on naproxen long term, as others said I just have to take it along side omeprazole or similar.

hugoagogo · 30/07/2021 19:53

Codeine is great, but talk about feeling funny! Also super addictive.

ChatterMonkey · 30/07/2021 19:56

Doctor was going to prescribe omeprazole as well but we have a load of it in the house anyway so she didnt bother. Dont think dp took one when he took it this morning though so could be the issue.

Yes i did read on the leaflet that it can cause dizziness/confusion etc, but dp is adamant that its not that sort of feeling. He does seem a bit spaced out though.

He had been having solpadine for the pain before, was slightly taking the edge off but not enough. And he hadnt had a bowel movement in a few days so was concerned about using that much longer. Due to previous gastro issues and lots of codeine needed, he has bad memories of extremely painful constipation so is very wary about that now.

I have taken codeine for back pain without any addiction issues but I think some people may be more sensitive, I think it's definitely OK for a few days as you can buy 3 days worth of cocodamol over the counter.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 30/07/2021 19:58

Yes it does cause constipation though!

ChatterMonkey · 30/07/2021 19:59

Might sound like a stupid question, but does he need to take omperazole at the same time as the naproxen? So eg in the morning, have a bowl.of cereal and then have the naproxen and the omprazole at the same time and then get on with his day?

Ive never had any side effects with it. Used it for many months due to back issues and when desperate with neuralgia due to wisdom tooth problems and it was brill (lucky have spare pills)

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 30/07/2021 20:01

I take them at the same time since having some bad stomach pains when I took the naproxen first.

LST · 30/07/2021 20:02

Yes I take them at the same time

ChatterMonkey · 30/07/2021 20:04

Thank you all, we'll go with the omprezole at the same time for the next lot, if dp decides to have any more. I think atm he doesnt want them at all, but it was the only thing that takes the edge of the pain, the solpadine wasnt touching the sides of it.

I take mine with either co codamol or tramadol. They normally work all together.. or at least take the edge off

Figgygal · 30/07/2021 20:08

My husband takes it when he fees bursitis it gives him terrible guts

ChatterMonkey · 30/07/2021 20:11

The tablets he has are 250mg amd he had 2 as advised, is that a high dose or just normal? Doctor advised 1 or 2 tablets twice daily, and he took 2, maybe should have started with 1 for first dose?

Omeprazole should be taken first thing, ideally half an hour before any food and drink.

Naproxen should be taken after food so usually one after breakfast and one after evening meal
It's not ideal to take them together as the omeprazole needs to take effect before eating and taking naproxen

Hangingtrousers · 31/07/2021 08:59

Yes take it with every dose. I've taken it for back pain and took the omperazole with each naproxen and been fine.
