DS may be off overseas to The States for sport for a year and I need to get him health insurance (club will cover when he is playing and at matches) but I need to get him some personal cover.

Any suggestions of who to use would be greatly appreciated

In 30 years in the US we had two providers.
Blue Cross, who are pretty much in all hospitals just about and most family practice doctors and specialists.
We had Kaiser Permanente first and all our children were born with them, with Kaiser you have to use their medical facilities and doctors and hospitals, we lived near to their big medical offices and so it was very convenient. Only moved to Blue cross when we moved out of town.

Just had a thought, if he is in Uni there playing sport, you can buy his insurance cheaper through the Uni, we did that for Ds1 for his first year, then he was able to rejoin Dh's work insurance as it covered uninsured adult kids up to 26 years old.

With a single insurer you will find a lot of different policies which vary massively, so it's worth understanding some of the jargon before you purchase. I'm with United Healthcare, my husband with Anthem Bluecross Blueshield. They are both widely accepted, but the details of the policy make all the difference.

The affordability of coverage and the number of providers who work with a specific insurance company can vary by state. I would advise looking at local clinics and hospitals to see whether they say they take certain policies on their websites to get an indication of good options.

Look carefully at the balance of the deductible, copay/coinsurance percentage and out-of-pocket max when you compare policies. Also know if you're buying an HMO or a PPO. HMO plans are cheaper but require PCP referrals and can get expensive if you end up in an out-of-network hospital in an emergency. PPOs don't require referrals, generally have more in-network specialists but cost more up front.

Get in touch with student financial services at his uni and ask them. They will likely have a medical coverage offering available for students, who are much cheaper to insure than us old people.

Our kids have cash management accounts with Fidelity Investments, mostly because that's our investment company and it's easy for us to put money in their accounts.

At many universities, they'll have a deal with a local bank to offer free accounts. Ask student financial services (sometimes called the Bursar's Office) when you ask about the medical insurance. If all else fails, have a look at this:

Good luck. I'm happy to answer further questions if I can.
